The Engineering and Computer Science Librarian is a critical member of the Syracuse University Libraries Subject Instruction Team situated within the Department of Research and Scholarship. They ensure that the Libraries collections and instructional services support the academic and research needs of students, staff, and faculty in the College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) related academic programs and research centers. The Librarian provides essential services including reference assistance, instruction, and collection development, and serves as the Libraries point of contact for ECS.
As a member of the Subject Instruction Team, the Librarian supports faculty and students through curriculum-based instruction, workshops, and programming, and fosters collaborative relationships with faculty to support instruction in research methods, identifying and assessing relevant source material, citation management, and other information literacy skills. The Librarian provides specialized instruction that addresses the unique needs of learners with varying skills, abilities, and learning styles.
The Librarian continuously assesses instructional services to ensure they meet the evolving expectations of faculty, students, staff, and the University community.
Education and Experience
Required qualifications:
MLS or ALA-accredited or equivalent combination of education and experience 1 year of experience working in an academic library Reference and instruction experience preferably in an academic library environment Demonstrated interest in engineering, computer science, or other STEM-related disciplines Demonstrated commitment to supporting and contributing to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment
Desired qualification:
Undergraduate degree in engineering, computer science, or a related discipline 1 year of experience serving patrons in STEM disciplines Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and instruction with an interest in developing research skills and/or information literacy instruction and engaging learning experiences Experience planning and delivering instruction, workshops, programs, or lesson plans in an academic library or educational setting Experience supervising student workers Working knowledge of AI research services related to artificial intelligence for research, teaching, and learning
Librarian Rank and Compensation
This position will be appointed at the Assistant Librarian, Senior Assistant Librarian, or Associate Librarian without Permanent ranking status, based on the successful candidates qualifications. Final salary will be commensurate with experience and assigned rank.
Assistant Librarian
Candidates may be appointed to this rank if they have little or no professional experience. It has a maximum of three terms before they are expected to apply for promotion to the next rank (Senior Assistant Librarian). Requirements for this rank include:
MLS or equivalent degree as appropriate to the position Additional academic preparation and/or related professional library experience if required by the position
Senior Assistant Librarian
Candidates may be appointed to this rank if they have successful professional experience. It has a maximum of three terms before they are expected to apply for promotion to the next rank (Associate Librarian). Requirements for this rank include:
MLS or equivalent degree Successful professional library experience Demonstrated competence in position responsibilities Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders Evidence of professional growth and initiative
Associate Librarian
Candidates may be appointed to this rank if they have substantial professional achievement and commitment. Librarians hired at the Associate rank will be required to apply for permanent ranking status, which signifies sustained achievement and contributions to Syracuse University Libraries. Requirements for this rank include:
MLS or equivalent degree Show excellent or outstanding performance in previous library roles Demonstrate significant contributions to library operations Provide evidence of professional commitment, such as committee work, conference attendance, publications, or professional development activities
