The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region Design, Engineering, and Construction Services, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1/2 Flex in Anchorage to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Base Salary Information:

Engineering Assistant 1: $33.76 / Hourly (OT Eligible)

Engineering Assistant 2: $38.91 / Hourly (OT Eligible)

What you will be doing:

At the Engineering Assistant 1 level, you will perform a variety of engineering duties to assist with both the utility permit and utility relocation programs. You will evaluate utility permits and recommend modifications or approval based on maintaining the integrity of the road surface and surrounding drainage facilities and safety considerations to the traveling public. Project assignments will consist of pavement preservation projects and other low complexity highway and aviation projects and require you to coordinate with local utility companies to identify and resolve utility conflicts through the development of utility relocation agreements.

At the Engineering Assistant 2 level, you will work with utility companies to negotiate utility relocation agreements and then use those agreements to facilitate the physical relocation work on-site during the construction season. In the field you will be working closely with the DOT&PF construction team, the utility companys construction crew, and the highway contractor. Post construction tasks include reviewing bills for accuracy and finalizing project documentation. You will be assigned to multiple projects of intermediate complexity.

At DOT&PFs Central Region Traffic, Safety, and Utilities Section we work on highway and aviation projects. We assess traffic safety concerns and coordinate the placement of utility infrastructure within the right-of-way. We contribute to DOT&PFs purpose to "Keep Alaska Moving", by managing traffic operations and facilitating the relocation of utility systems to allow for the improvement and safety of Alaska's highways and airports.

These positions require a person to build strong, long-term, and positive relationships with government agencies, utility companies, and the public.

The working environment you can expect:

The Anchorage office resides at the DOT&PFs Central Region Headquarters building by Lake Hood, the worlds busiest seaplane base. Lake Hood is surrounded by a walking/biking trail where employees can be spotted during lunch break. The duties may require overtime during the construction season. Office hours are flexible.

Special Note:

A valid Drivers License is required.

Engineer-in-Training (Fundamentals of Engineering) Certification is preferred but not essential.

Minimum Qualifications

Engineering Assistant 1

Bachelors degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.

Or:

A bachelors degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

Special Note:

An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelors degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.

Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be identified by the employing department.

Engineering Assistant 2

Bachelors degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.

AND

One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

A bachelors degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

AND

One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:

Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. It may be filled at the Engineering Assistant 1 or Engineering Assistant 2 level, depending on the applicants training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
