Job Description

The Opportunity

HBS is seeking an Engineering Excellence Leader to become the technical and operational leader of our Building Performance Engineering team. This is not a traditional Senior Energy Engineer position. You will be responsible for elevating the quality, consistency, accountability, customer experience, and technical reputation of our engineering organization while mentoring engineers and helping shape the future of Maryland's Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS).

Who We Are

HBS helps commercial building owners reduce operating costs, improve building performance, achieve Maryland BEPS compliance, and implement turnkey energy efficiency projects. Unlike many consulting firms, our recommendations become real projects. We audit, engineer, implement, verify results, and provide ongoing service, allowing our engineers to see the impact of their work.

Mission of the Role

The Engineering Excellence Leader is responsible for building an engineering organization known for technical excellence, operational discipline, outstanding customer communication, innovation, and measurable business results.

What Success Looks Like in the First 12 Months

·         Improve utility pre-approval and project closeout turnaround times.

·         Increase Building Tune-Up revenue through higher-quality engineering and stronger customer confidence.

·         Create a seamless engineering workflow from Audit through Pre-Approval to implementation handoff.

·         Reduce engineering rework by improving QA standards and accountability.

·         Develop engineers through coaching, mentoring, and regular technical reviews.

·         Strengthen relationships with utilities, customers, facility operators, and internal teams.

·         Generate implementation opportunities including BAS, HVAC, lighting, and maintenance agreements.

·         Introduce AI and process improvements that increase engineering productivity.

Primary Responsibilities

·         Lead the daily execution of the engineering department.

·         Review Building Tune-Ups, savings calculations, and complex pre-approvals.

·         Develop engineering standards, QA checklists, SOPs, and best practices.

·         Hold engineers accountable for quality, communication, and deadlines.

·         Coach and mentor engineering staff through regular feedback and training.

·         Serve as the technical face of HBS with customers and utility representatives.

·         Improve communication with facility operators so recommendations are understood and adopted.

·         Collaborate with Sales, Operations, Project Management, BAS, Service, and Implementation teams.

·         Identify additional opportunities for customers and support cross-selling across HBS.

·         Champion AI, automation, and workflow improvements.

Authority

·         Approve or reject engineering deliverables.

·         Require engineering revisions.

·         Reprioritize engineering work.

·         Make technical decisions within HBS standards.

·         Hold engineering staff accountable for commitments and performance.

·         Represent Engineering in cross-functional planning.

Ideal Candidate

·         Approximately 4–8+ years of experience with demonstrated leadership potential.

·         Background in Energy Engineering, BAS, Commissioning, Retro-Commissioning, ESCOs, or Building Performance.

·         Advanced Excel including energy savings calculations and bin weather analysis.

·         Strong BAS knowledge (Niagara, Trane, Siemens, Schneider, JCI, Honeywell, etc.).

·         Excellent communication and presentation skills.

·         Highly organized and comfortable managing many concurrent projects.

·         Excited by AI and continuous improvement.

Who Thrives at HBS

·         People who care about results—not just reports.

·         People who take ownership from audit through implementation.

·         People who seek innovative solutions and enjoy seeing those solutions work.

·         People who communicate proactively and build trusted relationships.

·         People who embrace accountability and help others succeed.

·         People who enjoy a fast-paced environment where every day is different.

Who Is Not a Fit

·         Passive communicators who avoid customer interaction.

·         Individuals who miss deadlines or require constant follow-up.

·         Engineers who produce sloppy or inaccurate work.

·         People who simply copy previous work instead of thinking critically.

·         Individuals who see engineering as completing paperwork rather than delivering customer outcomes.

Career Growth

We hire for potential, not just experience. Exceptional performers will have opportunities to grow into senior engineering leadership roles as HBS continues to expand. Leadership opportunities are based on performance, ownership, and the ability to build high-performing teams.

Why Join HBS?

·         Help define the future of Maryland BEPS compliance.

·         See your engineering recommendations implemented.

·         Influence the direction of a growing engineering organization.

·         Work with a collaborative team that values innovation.

·         Build a long-term leadership career, not just another engineering job.
