    Job Description

    Purpose of Position: To provide engineering or construction management students with an opportunity to gain practical railroad experience in engineering and project management activities. Incumbent works under the close supervision of a Director, Engineering Services and Director Project Management and brings any issues or discrepancies to the Project Manager for resolution.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Performs onsite work inspections to ensure compliance with contract drawings and specifications. Checks construction layout and contractor layout; estimates quantities and performs grade checking and cut/fill calculations. Involves traveling to project sites at various locations along the Railbelt.

    Responsible for developing and maintaining submittal and design clarification/verification request (DCVR) registers to maintain a record of project correspondences, clarifications, and submittals. Coordinates receipt of submittals (e.g. schedules, work plans, progress payments, etc.) and DCVRs from contractors and manages the routing of submittals.

    Assists with coordination of quality control and testing to ensure that the project is built in compliance with bid specifications.

    Contributes to the development of ARRC Standards, including the use of AutoCAD under the supervision of Engineering Services.

    Performs project cost tracking, researching invoice information, compiling cost data, verifying contract unit-price quantities, and project cost reporting.

    Assists in producing and updating project schedules.

    FACTOR 1: Technical and Operational Knowledge

    Knowledge of basic engineering and project management principles is required. Knowledge of advanced math (geometry, algebra, and trigonometry) and basic accounting for performing engineering and financial calculations is required. Knowledge of elementary surveying and proper field note techniques is required. Ability to operate a computer and use MS Excel and MS Word is required.

    FACTOR 2: Analytical Skills and Impact

    Uses knowledge of Engineering and Project Management principles to assist the Project Manager in completing projects within the project schedule, within the allowable budget, and in compliance with contract documents.

    FACTOR 3: Supervision and Control

    The incumbent has no direct supervisory responsibilities. The incumbent works under the direction of the Engineering Director, in applying academic learning to the coordinating and supervising of construction projects and engineering efforts.

    FACTOR 4: Communication

    Contacts are with higher-level engineers (Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Project Planning Personnel) and other ARRC employees for the purpose of coordinating work assignments and performance of day-to-day duties. In a learning environment, the incumbent brings issues and discrepancies to the Project Manager for resolution and receives instructions as to how to handle situations.

    FACTOR 5: Working Conditions

    Work is performed in the main office, field offices, and outdoors at project sites.

    Will be required to drive on an as-needed basis.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited college or university in a curriculum leading to a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Construction Management and must have completed at least one year of undergraduate Engineering or Construction Management curriculum. Proof of enrollment and documentation of curriculum studied is required. Knowledge of basic engineering concepts and principles is required. Knowledge of advanced math (geometry, algebra, and trigonometry) and basic accounting for performing engineering and financial calculations is required. Knowledge of elementary surveying and proper field note techniques is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word is required.

    Must possess a valid driver's license. To be considered a valid drivers license, an employee must maintain a continuous three-year period free of any Driving Under the Influence (DUI) or Operating Under the Influence (OUI) convictions.
