    Engineering Supervisor

    The DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Downtown South Bend is seeking an experienced, dependable, and hands-on Engineering Supervisor to join our team!

    Located in the heart of downtown South Bend, our 9-story, full-service hotel features a beautiful glass atrium, Baker’s Bar & Grill, Starbucks, approximately 15,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space, an indoor pool and fitness center, guest rooms, public areas, and extensive building systems. Maintaining a property of this size and complexity requires strong technical knowledge, consistent preventive maintenance, attention to detail, and responsive leadership.

    The Engineering Supervisor plays an important role in maintaining the safety, functionality, appearance, and overall condition of the hotel. This position assists with leading the daily operations of the Engineering Department while remaining actively involved in maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, inspections, and special projects throughout the property.

    The ideal candidate is a skilled problem-solver who takes pride in their work, responds with urgency, and can effectively organize priorities while providing direction and hands-on support to the Engineering team.

    Pay: Competitive hourly rate based on experience, technical knowledge, and applicable licenses or certifications.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Assist in supervising, organizing, and directing the daily activities of the Engineering and Maintenance team.
    • Assign, prioritize, track, and follow up on work orders, preventive maintenance assignments, inspections, and repair projects.
    • Help ensure the hotel remains safe, functional, well-maintained, and visually appealing for guests and team members.
    • Perform and oversee repairs involving HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, carpentry, painting, mechanical equipment, fixtures, appliances, and general building maintenance.
    • Respond promptly, professionally, and courteously to guest maintenance concerns and departmental service requests.
    • Conduct routine inspections of guest rooms, public areas, back-of-house areas, the pool, exterior spaces, mechanical rooms, and building equipment.
    • Identify potential maintenance or safety concerns and take proactive steps to correct them before they result in service disruptions or costly repairs.
    • Assist in developing, maintaining, and completing an effective preventive maintenance program for hotel equipment and building systems.
    • Troubleshoot equipment failures, identify root causes, and determine whether repairs can be safely completed in-house or require a qualified outside contractor.
    • Monitor mechanical equipment, building systems, utilities, temperatures, and required readings.
    • Maintain appropriate inventory levels of frequently used parts, tools, equipment, and maintenance supplies.
    • Ensure work orders, inspections, repairs, readings, and completed projects are accurately documented and communicated.
    • Assist with coordinating, monitoring, and following up with outside vendors and contractors.
    • Support compliance with Hilton brand standards, hotel safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and applicable building and safety codes.
    • Provide hands-on training, guidance, and technical support to Engineering team members.
    • Promote accountability, teamwork, professionalism, and safe work practices within the department.
    • Communicate effectively with the Front Desk, Housekeeping, hotel leadership, and other departments regarding room status, maintenance concerns, emergencies, service disruptions, and major repairs.
    • Assist with emergency situations and after-hours maintenance needs as required.
    • Maintain clean, organized, secure, and safe engineering workspaces, storage areas, and mechanical rooms.
    • Participate in property improvement projects and other assignments as directed by hotel leadership.

    Qualifications and Job Skills

    • Strong working knowledge of general building maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance practices.
    • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, carpentry, painting, and general construction systems.
    • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify problems and determine safe, practical, and cost-effective repair solutions.
    • Ability to read and understand specifications, equipment manuals, instructions, diagrams, and basic technical information.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple work orders, emergencies, and ongoing projects.
    • Ability to lead by example, hold team members accountable, and work collaboratively with other hotel departments.
    • Strong attention to detail, safety, documentation, and preventive maintenance.
    • Professional communication skills and a guest-focused approach to service.
    • Ability to work independently, use sound judgment, and respond calmly during urgent or emergency situations.
    • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, and maintenance equipment.
    • Ability to lift and move maintenance materials, parts, tools, and equipment.
    • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and frequently bend, kneel, climb, reach, push, pull, and work in confined or mechanical areas.
    • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
    • Hotel, multifamily, healthcare, manufacturing, or commercial building maintenance experience is strongly preferred.
    • Previous supervisory, team lead, or senior maintenance experience is preferred.
    • Availability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, evenings, and occasional after-hours emergency calls, based on the operational needs of the hotel.

    Education

    High school diploma or equivalent required. Technical school, vocational training, apprenticeship experience, or trade-related education is strongly preferred.

    Licenses and Certifications

    Applicable trade licenses and professional certifications are highly valued and may influence the starting rate of pay. Relevant credentials may include HVAC, electrical, plumbing, refrigeration, pool operations, building maintenance, or other related technical certifications.

    EPA certification and/or Certified Pool Operator certification is preferred but not required.
