Engineering Technican III

Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Engineering Technician III within the Design & Construction section of our Engineering Department. As an Engineering Technician for WCRC you would oversee a range of quality control inspection activities, participate in reviewing and preparing plans and related documents, and ensuring compliance with Road Commission and Michigan Department of Transportation procedures, specifications, and documentation requirements related to transportation construction activities, including roadway and bridge construction.

Schedule

• Normal schedule: Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
• Summer schedule: Option to work 4/10 or 5/8 work schedule.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Ensures that transportation construction activities, including roadway and bridge construction, conform to Road Commission and/or Michigan Department of Transportation procedures, regulations, approved plans, and specifications.

• Considers project budgetary constraints; facilitates efficient completion of tasks and site work; and evaluates alternative construction techniques to resolve jobsite complications.

• Performs recordkeeping duties, including the drafting and review of daily inspection reports, site logs, sketches, and the computation of areas and volumes. Sets up and maintains engineering file systems to support timely contractor payments and ensure accurate documentation for federal and/or state funding compliance.

• Reviews and prepares transportation construction plans, specifications, contract documents, and estimates.

• Prepares correspondence as necessary to document and facilitate the completion of tasks.

• Assists the project engineer with effective scheduling of construction project personnel, including contractor, surveying, and testing personnel, to support timely completion of jobsite tasks.

• Provides timely written and/or verbal responses within areas of responsibility, addressing inquiries and concerns from project stakeholders, including Road Commission staff, governmental representatives, contractors, consultants, utility owners, business owners, residents, and motorists.

• Attends meetings with project stakeholders to review, discuss, and resolve issues related to transportation construction activities.

• Analyzes and interprets laboratory and field data from investigations.

• Effectively utilizes Road Commission equipment, including surveying instruments, measurement tools, office supplies, personal computers, jobsite office trailers, and assigned vehicles.

REQUIREMENTS

• Associate's degree in civil engineering technology, construction technology, surveying technology, or its equivalent.

• Minimum of five years' experience as a Technician II or equivalent required, performing technical quality control inspection activities, review and preparation of plans and related documents.
