Job SummaryThe Nevada Department of Transportation is hiring an Engineering Technician 1 as an underfill for an Engineering Technician 3 located in Las Vegas within the Construction Division on crew 915. The incumbent will work in the field performing required construction inspections, testing, and surveying; complete field and office work to assure contractor work is documented per the specifications and quantities for prompt payment. This is an on‑site position and does not offer remote work options.EligibilityApplicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States; this position is not sponsored for visa or employment authorization.Essential QualificationsHigh school graduation or equivalent education.One year of experience involving public contact, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Valid Nevada driver's license at the time of appointment.Job Duties (Responsibilities)Assist engineers in performing field and laboratory tests and setting up equipment; gather and compile data, analyze technical problems, conduct research, and analyze data to ensure accuracy and conformance to policies and standards.Work with water rights, bid documents, contract plans, right‑of‑way plans, acquisition and disposal documentation, and federal and state guidelines; review, prioritize, research, and prepare information in appropriate format.Perform technical research to ensure department programs, testing methods, policies and procedures comply with federal and state requirements; review technical documents, analyze and interpret data, note discrepancies, and recommend corrective actions.Maintain records and contract documents; enter data into computer systems for analysis; review applications and technical reports for completeness and clarity.Perform field inspections of construction projects, well locations and water use, material equipment, property lines, and boundaries; review and interpret construction plans and water rights records; make recommendations and document inspection processes.Prepare maps, charts, graphs, tables, slopes, and contours for construction projects, right‑of‑way locations, water rights ownership, and related data.Conduct surveying work including staking, alignments, fence lines, cross sections; set control points, locate wells, and establish right‑of‑way lines; operate surveying equipment.Perform material and soil testing in a laboratory setting; research material properties and propose new specifications and test procedures.Maintain and calibrate equipment; keep inventory and repair records; recommend repair or replacement as needed.Research property ownership, boundaries, encumbrances, and title condition; calculate survey and property boundaries, right‑of‑way lines, slopes, contours, and structural alignments.Other related duties as assigned under close supervision of a higher‑level technician or engineer.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of personal computers and related ancillary equipment.Skills in mathematics including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; work independently with frequent interruptions; establish collaborative relationships with coworkers and the public.Ability to follow oral and written instructions; convert mathematical data and measurements; read and understand policy and procedure.Attention to repetitive work, accurate data transcription, and gathering of data.BenefitsHealth Insurance: Medical, dental, life, and disability insurance for employees and dependents through the Public Employees' Benefits Program (PEBP).Vacation: Accrual of three weeks of annual leave each year.Sick Leave: Accrual of three weeks of sick leave each year.Paid Holidays: 12 paid holidays per year.Retirement: Participation in the Nevada Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).Deferred Compensation: Voluntary program.No Nevada state income tax.Public Service Loan Forgiveness eligibility.Longevity Payments Eligibility – performance rating of “standard” or better and at least eight continuous years of service.Equal Opportunity StatementThe State of Nevada is an equal opportunity employer dedicated to building diverse, inclusive, and innovative work environments with employees who reflect our communities and enthusiastically serve them.
