Position Overview

Leidos is seeking an Engineering Technician 2 - Make Ready / Joint Use Designer to support the Georgia Power Joint Use Program in Atlanta, GA. This role focuses on Make Ready Engineering (MRE) and fiber/telecommunications attachment design on existing overhead distribution systems.

This is an in-office position supporting a fast-paced, high-volume program. The ideal candidate will have prior exposure to electric distribution, joint use, or Make Ready design, and a strong understanding of NESC requirements.

You will work with field data, GIS tools, and pole loading software to develop construction-ready design packages, support QA/QC efforts, and help ensure compliance with utility standards.

  • This position would require the selected candidate to work for our contractor for approximately 6-12 months with the possibility of converting to a direct Leidos employee at the end of that period.*

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop Make Ready engineering design packages for telecommunications (fiber) attachments on utility poles using Leidos proprietary software SkyWire
  • Analyze pole loading, clearance requirements, and Make Ready conditions using tools such as Pole Foreman, SPIDACalc, and/or O-Calc
  • Review field-collected and post-construction data to validate existing conditions and support accurate design development
  • Identify and resolve NESC clearance violations and pole capacity issues
  • Prepare Make Ready Engineering (MRE) documentation, including Bills of Material (BOM) and construction work packages
  • Utilize GIS and design tools to create detailed engineering drawings
  • Review and revise designs based on QA/QC feedback, with opportunity to grow into a QA/QC-focused role
  • Coordinate with internal team members and stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate project delivery
  • Track project progress and maintain accurate design records for compliance and reporting
  • Occasionally perform field visits, pole surveys, and data validation
  • Support storm restoration efforts as needed

Typical Day

Receive assigned work, review GIS and field data, develop Make Ready design packages, update designs based on reviewer feedback, and collaborate with team members to meet production timelines and quality standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience or exposure to electric distribution, joint use, or Make Ready design
  • Basic understanding of National Electric Safety Code (NESC) standards
  • Experience with GIS, CAD, or other utility design software
  • Familiarity with pole loading analysis concepts (experience with Pole Foreman, SPIDACalc, or O-Calc is a plus)
  • Ability to interpret field data and translate it into engineering designs
  • Strong computer skills and attention to detail
  • Valid driver's license and ability to support field work as needed
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Accountability and ability to manage time in a fast-paced setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Southern Company Power standards
  • Experience with work management systems or estimating tools
  • Basic proficiency in Excel
  • Experience identifying electric and communication facilities on poles
  • Exposure to QA/QC processes for engineering design

  • Fast-paced, high-volume production environment with strict timelines
  • Team environment (10-12 members) with opportunity for growth
  • Occasional overtime may be required (pre-approved)

Growth Opportunities

  • Opportunity to advance into a QA/QC role
  • Exposure to utility standards, Make Ready engineering, and joint use coordination
  • Potential for conversion to full-time employment based on performance

Education & Experience

  • Experience supporting Joint Use or telecom fiber Make Ready projects
  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, Engineering Technology, or a related field and 1-2 years experience, OR
