Engineering Technician

You’ll fabricate, prototype, and test Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) components from concept through pilot build. This is a hands-on role in a lab/cleanroom environment working closely with R&D engineers to translate prints and models into reliable processes and parts.

What you’ll do:

• Build & fabricate SMA devices

• Create prototype and production components to specification using specialized fixtures and jigs

• Setup and operate forming operations using wire drawing and rolling mills

• Configure furnaces and run heat-treat and shape-set thermal cycles

• Join subcomponents and packages using laser welding, crimping, and fastening

• Surface finish by deburring, tumbling, cleaning, pickling, passivating and electropolishing

• Prototyping & design support

• Iterate quickly on concepts with design and engineering teams

• Translate sketches and CAD into simple tooling

• Build and maintain fixtures for shape-setting and assembly

• 3D print packages, housings, and fixtures

• Testing and metrology

• Dimensional inspection (microscopy, vision system)

• Mechanical testing (tensile, bend/recovery, fatigue)

• Thermal analysis (bend free-recovery, DSC)

• Surface finish (visual standards, roughness)

• Process control and documentation

• Follow health and safety protocols

• Run builds under travelers/DHRs; record lot numbers, process parameters, and test results with full traceability

• Maintain equipment, ensure calibration, and monitor consumables inventory

• Follow good manufacturing practices, where appropriate What you’ll bring:

  Must-haves:- Diploma/degree in Mechanical/Mechatronics/Manufacturing/Materials or equivalent experience

  • Strong mechanical aptitude, comfortable with prints, GD&T basics, CNC/automated equipment, and documenting results
  • Strong attention to detail, steady hand skills, and good lab/shop habits

  Assets:- Prior Nitinol (or similar material) experience (shapesetting, mechanical testing, thermal analysis)

  • CAD literacy (Fusion 360/Inventor), basic CAM or 3D printing is a plus
  • Data tools (Excel/Minitab/Python) and report writing experience
  • Experience with fixture design, jig building, and component assembly
  • Measurement tools and visual inspection systems

  Work environment- Laboratory setting; standing, fine motor work, microscope; lifting up to 50 lbs

  • Exposure to laser light, acids/solvents, and heated equipment with appropriate PPE and training
  • Typical hours MondayFriday; occasional off-shift support during validation or urgent builds
