Job Description

This Engineering Technician role focuses on testing and supporting electronic products and access/authentication solutions. You will perform comprehensive testing of circuits, readers, and product support applications using a range of electronic test instruments and automated test systems. You will collaborate closely with test and development engineers to create, revise, and document test procedures, and you will help ensure products meet performance and quality standards before release. The role also includes mentoring and training manufacturing support technicians as new programs and products are introduced.

Responsibilities

• Test all phases of circuit and reader performance using a variety of test instruments, including voltmeters, digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, soldering equipment, and hand tools.
• Test product support applications to verify proper functionality and performance.
• Use configuration utilities to test and validate software, firmware, and hardware components.
• Load and operate automated test systems to execute standardized test sequences.
• Document detailed test procedures and ensure they are properly maintained within document control systems.
• Work closely with test and development engineers to create new test procedures for emerging products and programs.
• Revise, update, and improve existing test procedures to reflect design changes and best practices.
• Troubleshoot down to the discrete component level using specifications, schematics, and PCB layouts.
• Use PC-based applications and tools for device programming, control, and data capture during testing.
• Mentor and train manufacturing support technicians on test methods, procedures, and equipment usage.
• Support testing of new products introduced as part of newly awarded programs and initiatives.

Essential Skills

• Ability to work independently and manage assigned testing tasks with minimal supervision.
• Working knowledge of DC, AC, and digital circuits.
• Familiarity with digital conversions and related measurement concepts.
• Ability to use specifications, schematics, and PCB layouts to troubleshoot down to discrete component level.
• Hands-on experience using oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, signal generators, protocol analyzers, and other electronic test equipment.
• Proficiency using PC applications for device programming and control.
• Excellent soldering and de-soldering skills for through-hole and surface-mount (SMT) components.
• Demonstrated proficiency with MS Word and Excel for documentation and reporting.
• Experience using schematic capture tools and PCB viewer applications.
• Experience working with test equipment in an engineering or electronics environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with USB and RS-232 interfaces.
• Experience with 8-bit and 16-bit embedded microcontrollers.
• Experience with the Atlassian toolset, including JIRA and Confluence, for tracking tasks and documentation.
• Experience testing or supporting access and authentication products, readers, or similar electronic devices.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to following documented procedures.
• Effective communication skills for collaborating with engineers and training technicians.
• Ability to adapt to new products, technologies, and testing methodologies as new programs are introduced.

Work Environment

The role supports secure access and authentication solutions used across a wide range of devices, including proximity cards, smart cards, mobile credentials, and multi-factor authentication platforms. You will work with innovative technologies designed to acquire and protect identity data for applications such as printers, healthcare devices, process controllers, and data records in healthcare, manufacturing, government, and enterprise environments. The work involves frequent use of electronic test instruments, automated test systems, configuration utilities, and PC-based tools in a lab or engineering environment. You will collaborate with engineering and manufacturing teams as new credential types, device form factors, and customer demands emerge, contributing to products that meet global regulatory standards. The environment emphasizes continuous improvement, documentation discipline, and close partnership with technology and integration partners to deliver secure and reliable solutions.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Hoffman Estates, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $38.00/hr.
