Opportunity
This is more than a job posting for *** Company, one of the oldest and largest privately held companies in North America. This is an invitation to collaborate, learn, and apply your craft to develop prototypes in a creative, hands-on culture where ideas move quickly from concept to reality. If you enjoy solving problems with your hands, working with a team that values quality, and building tangible parts that influence real products, this role offers the opportunity to make a visible impact.
Prototyping Technicians are responsible for creating prototypes that support new product development, utilizing a variety of skilled trade techniques to produce models, fixtures, and components. You will translate early concepts and engineering intent into physical builds that can be evaluated for form, fit, function, durability, and manufacturability. This role spans the entire development cycle from concept design through prototyping, testing, and validation and requires a strong mix of craftsmanship, curiosity, and attention to detail.
In addition to operating a variety of machines and hand tools, you will help maintain and calibrate shop equipment, document build details, and ensure a clean and safe work environment. You will collaborate closely with engineering, industrial design, and advanced development teams to plan builds, review drawings, recommend practical fabrication approaches, and iterate quickly based on test results and feedback. You may support multiple projects at once and will be relied upon to communicate progress, risks, and timing in order to keep development moving forward.
Key Responsibilities
" Build and modify prototype parts, subassemblies, and test fixtures using machining, welding, fabrication, construction, and finishing techniques as needed.
" Review engineering drawings and sketches; clarify requirements with engineers and designers to ensure prototypes meet intent and critical dimensions.
" Select appropriate materials and processes (e.g., metal, plastics, wood, composites; fastening, adhesives, coatings) to meet prototype performance and timeline needs.
" Maintain shop readiness by performing basic preventive maintenance and housekeeping to uphold safety and quality standards.
" Identify opportunities to improve build methods, tooling, and workflows; share ideas during project reviews and continuous improvement discussions.
Sought after Skills:
" Partner with New Product Development teams to solve technical challenges and deliver high-quality prototypes on schedule, balancing speed with craftsmanship.
" Perform fabrication work on weldments, brackets, frames, and test-bench equipment using safe shop practices.
" Build displays, mockups, and concept models using general construction techniques and a variety of materials.
" Complete finishing work such as sanding, surface prep, painting, and cosmetic detailing to support design reviews and customer-facing evaluations.
" Interpret and work from engineering drawings with accuracy, including measurement, layout, and tolerance awareness.
" Perform routine maintenance, basic troubleshooting, and cleaning of tools and equipment to keep the shop running efficiently.
" Participate in brainstorming sessions and provide practical feedback on design, materials, and process improvements.
" Operate shop equipment such as mills, lathes, grinders, drill presses, saws, and handheld power tools, as appropriate for the build.
Requirements: (Depending on experience level guidance and or training from tenured Staff will be included)
" Experience in various skills such as machining, welding, fabrication, or construction, but we would be willing to train the right candidate in any of those areas.
" Work or educational experience with multiple skilled trades knowledge like, manual machining, fabrication, molding/casting, fixture building, general construction & painting is preferred, but we are willing to train the right candidate.
