Job Title: Engineering Technician I
Location: Round Lake, IL
Duration: 12 Months

Job Description:

We are seeking a skilled Engineering Technician I to support the Electrical R&D Laboratory in the soldering, rework, testing, and validation of new and existing electromechanical medical devices. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience in fine-pitch surface mount soldering, PCB rework, and electronics testing, with the ability to perform lab activities independently while maintaining accurate documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform precision hand soldering, rework, and repair of printed circuit boards (PCBs), including SMT components as small as 0201, 0.5 mm pitch packages, and BGA components using hot air rework techniques.
  • Execute electrical testing at the board and system levels using laboratory equipment such as:
    • Digital Multimeters (DMMs)
    • Oscilloscopes
    • DC Power Supplies
    • Electronic Loads
    • Logic Analyzers
    • Scales and other electronic test instruments
  • Set up, perform, and monitor electrical tests with minimal supervision.
  • Record, organize, and maintain accurate test data and laboratory documentation.
  • Assist engineers with troubleshooting, failure analysis, and validation activities.
  • Monitor automated testing and provide status updates with basic data interpretation.
  • Maintain laboratory organization, equipment, and inventory.
  • Follow engineering procedures and safety guidelines while working with test equipment.
  • Collaborate with Engineering Managers, Test Engineers, and Lab Supervisors to support product development activities.
  • Review PCB layouts using Altium Designer or similar PCB viewing tools to identify component placement and electrical connections for rework (viewing only; design experience is not required).
  • Support future development activities, including test case writing, based on experience and business needs.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or related field preferred).
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on soldering experience in an electronics manufacturing or R&D environment.
  • At least 1 year of electronics testing experience using standard laboratory equipment.
  • Strong expertise in:
    • Fine-pitch SMT soldering
    • PCB rework and repair
    • BGA rework
    • Hot air rework techniques
  • Experience executing electrical tests and interpreting basic test results.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Excel and documentation tools.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and record-keeping skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in an Electrical R&D or Medical Device environment.
  • Familiarity with Altium Designer or other PCB layout/viewing software.
  • Experience supporting automated testing environments.
  • Ability to assist with test procedure or test case development.
