Job Description

Leidos Defense has an opening for an Engineering Technician III supporting our NATSC contract in Newport Rhode Island. The candidate, under the direction of the Engineering Manager and Production Support Supervisor, will support our Navy Array Technical Support Center (NATSC) contract at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Division Newport, Rhode Island. An Engineering Technician III performs assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed, selects or adapts standard procedures or equipment, using fully applicable precedents, receives initial instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from supervisor or manager as needed, performs recurring work independently.

Primary responsibilities

A detail-oriented and highly capable Engineering Technician to join the Production Support team. In this role, you will be responsible for the repair, inspection, and preventative maintenance of Jigs, Tools, and Test Equipment (JTF). The ideal candidate is comfortable working independently on complex electrical and fiber optic assemblies, operating standard test equipment, and maintaining audit-ready documentation while mentoring junior staff. This role requires a balance of hands-on technical skill and the critical judgment needed to adapt standard procedures for non-routine troubleshooting and repair.

Specific Duties

  • Repair, modify, and troubleshooting modules or components.

  • Assemble or install equipment or parts that require simple wiring, soldering, or connecting.

  • Build and repair pigtail assemblies according to detailed documentation.

  • Build, inspect, polish, and test fiber optic cables.

  • Use test equipment to take measurements and readings to troubleshoot or repair JTF, equipment, or parts and components.

  • Conduct experiments and tests that may require minor test setup modifications and subjective judgment.

  • Perform PM's on JTF, including fiber and electrical measurements. Apply necessary markings and safely work with hazardous materials as defined by established PM Cards.

  • Follow standard work methods on recurring assignments independently. Select and adapt standard procedures using fully applicable precedents.

  • Manage independent workstreams with minimal supervision while supporting broader team goals.

  • Receive explicit instructions for unfamiliar assignments.

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area at all times.

  • Provide regular status updates to the Supervisor.

Basic Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizenship required.

  • High school/vocational school diploma or GED certificate and 2+ years electronics repair relevant work experience or a related Technical School or Navy experience.

  • Experience using general purpose test equipment.

  • Candidates must be capable of soldering wires and inspecting and polishing fiber optic cables. The selected candidate will be provided with fiber optic and J-STD solder training.

  • Experience performing tasks using formal work procedures.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD secret level clearance. Must have a minimum of a DOD Interim secret level clearance to start in this position.

  • All employees must conduct themselves in accordance with Leidos Values and Business Ethics at all times.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree from a Technical School a plus.

  • Knowledge of UTH operations or other production lines operations involved with position.

  • Knowledge of standard computer operations and Microsoft Office and programming software.
