What You Will Do

The V-6 Non-Destructive Testing & Evaluation (NDT&E) group is seeking a motivated Engineering Technologist (ET) 1 to support radiographic inspection capabilities at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The primary responsibility of this position is the operation and support of our two accelerator systems operating in the mega-volt energy range and used for advanced non-destructive evaluation of mission-critical components. This role directly supports LANL's national security mission by enabling safe, reliable, and high-quality radiographic data collection. Some examples of job responsibilities are below:

  • Operating two accelerator systems for radiographic and NDE applications.
  • Supporting setup, execution, and teardown of radiographic inspections and tests.
  • Assisting engineers and scientists with experimental configurations and data collection.
  • Performing routine operational checks, troubleshooting, and basic maintenance of accelerator and NDE equipment.
  • Working in compliance with radiological, safety, security, and DOE Accelerator requirements.
  • Maintaining accurate operational logs, procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Supporting continuous improvement of NDE processes, equipment reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Supporting field radiography off-site by operating portable accelerators.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Technical training or experience in engineering technology, electronics, mechanical systems, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on assignments.
  • Ability to follow detailed technical procedures in a highly regulated, safety-focused environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn complex accelerator and NDE systems.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary technical team.
  • Willingness to travel to locations off-site to perform field radiography.
  • Ability to work within a team-based environment to complete projects.


Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and support maintenance activities with limited supervision.
  • Experience in Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) methods (e.g., radiography, computed radiography, digital imaging).
  • Experience with GD&T.
  • Familiarity with radiation-producing devices and radiological work environments.
  • Experience supporting laboratories, production, or research operations.
  • Familiarity with DOE Accelerator Order 420.2D and the conduct of maintenance.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance practices, configuration control, or technical documentation.
  • High Explosive Handler (or willingness to obtain).


Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

  • The selected candidate may travel up to 15% of the time. Travel requirements are based on the demand for field radiography and can vary greatly from year-to-year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
