Meeting the Needs of Every Learner, Every Day
McFarland School District is seeking highly dynamic candidates to fill an English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher opening beginning in the 2026-2027 school year. We aspire to hire individuals who can help us work toward our mission of meeting the needs of every learner, every day, and our vision of being an equitable and inclusive community committed to student belonging, achievement, and growth.
What Your Day Will Look Like:
The ESL Teacher works in various instructional settings across the district, including general education classrooms, small groups, and individual pull-out spaces. The position may require travel between school buildings, collaboration with multiple staff teams, and regular family engagement. Instructional activities may occur in-person or through virtual platforms, depending on student needs.
Our Ideal Candidate:
• Provide English language development instruction to identified students using research-based strategies aligned with WIDA English Language Development Standards. • Collaborate with classroom teachers to plan and adapt instruction that integrates language and content learning for ESLs. • Assess and monitor student progress in language acquisition and academic achievement using formal and informal assessments. • Participate in the identification, placement, and annual review of ESL students, including administering WIDA Screener and ACCESS testing. • Use data to guide instruction and communicate student progress with families and staff. • Develop and maintain Individual Language Plans or ESL service plans and ensure staff are informed of accommodations and instructional supports. • Provide consultation and professional learning to staff on culturally and linguistically responsive practices. • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and district ESL requirements, including reporting and documentation. • Actively engage families of English Learners, providing interpretation/translation support when appropriate and connecting families to community resources. • Support students social-emotional and cultural adjustment to school settings. • Collaborate with school teams to ensure equitable access to services, extracurriculars, and school communication.
Why People Stay:
Through one-on-one interviews, McFarland teachers say making deep connections with colleagues (including administrators) and students helps them feel supported in McFarland. Teachers who have worked in other districts noted how McFarland class sizes are lower, special education caseloads are smaller, team budgets are larger, and they are glad to work in a community that supports schools, has a positive climate, and a school board that respects teachers. We have a full-time librarian, social worker, school psychologist, and at least one school counselor in each building.
The District:
The McFarland School District stands out as one of the top academic districts in Dane County and Wisconsin, offering a strong educational foundation that families and educators are proud of. With an average enrollment of 2,100 to 2,400 students, McFarland is large enough to provide a comprehensive EC-12 academic and co-curricular program, yet small enough to focus on each students unique needs. Known statewide for its welcoming atmosphere and student-centered approach, McFarland consistently attracts top-quality staff who enhance our vibrant, thriving community.
