Job Summary:
English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher provides instruction that engages students in the study of literature, writing, language, and communication. The teacher fosters critical thinking, reading comprehension, and effective writing skills while aligning instruction with state standards. This role also emphasizes building strong foundations for academic success throughout high school and beyond.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with district and state English Language Arts standards.
- Teach skills in reading comprehension, literary analysis, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and oral communication.
- Engage students in a variety of texts, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama, that reflect diverse voices and perspectives.
- Create opportunities for students to practice narrative, argumentative, and informative writing.
- Use assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction to meet individual learning needs.
- Incorporate technology and digital literacy into instruction.
- Foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and collaboration.
- Provide timely and constructive feedback on assignments, essays, and projects.
- Maintain accurate records of student performance and communicate progress with students, parents, and administrators.
- Participate in professional learning communities, faculty meetings, and school activities.
- Uphold school policies, classroom management procedures, and high expectations for student behavior and achievement.
Qualifications:
- Valid state teaching license/certification in English/Language Arts, grades 9â12.
- Strong knowledge of literature, composition, grammar, and instructional strategies.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to differentiate instruction to support diverse learners.
- Commitment to fostering a growth mindset and lifelong love of reading and writing in students.
Work Environment:
This position operates in a classroom setting within a high school environment. Teachers may also be responsible for supervising extracurricular activities, supporting standardized testing, and participating in professional development.
