    Job Description

    Under the direct supervision of the 5th-8th Grade Principal, the Sixth Grade ELA Teacher guides middle schoolers through a crucial developmental shift, moving from elementary reading skills to critical analysis and deeper comprehension. The teacher fosters a classroom environment where students analyze literary text, develop evidence-based writing skills across various genres, and refine their speaking and listening abilities to collaborate effectively with peers. By introducing engaging informational texts & literature and structured composition work, the Sixth Grade ELA Teacher inspires students to think critically, expand their vocabularies, and build the foundational literacy skills needed for success in upper middle school.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Develop ELA lesson plans and instructional materials integrating the WI Standards for ELA

    Communicate positively and effectively with all students, staff, and parents

    Collaborate with grade-level and vertical content teams as well as all other district faculty and staff

    Develop positive relationships with students, staff, and the school community

    Engage in ongoing professional learning

    Create and maintain an environment that promotes and engages learning

    Engage in the school community, contributing to school initiatives and projects beyond classroom duties

    Implement consistent classroom expectations & classroom management strategies

    Create and facilitate ongoing communication with families regarding the instructional program, student progress, and ways for families to engage in the learning process

    Create and maintain an environment that promotes and engages learning

    Support students in developing social-emotional skills

    Analyze student writing and assignments to determine student understanding and teaching effectiveness

    Evaluate student performance and demonstrate gains in student performance

    Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs

    Develop, administer, and evaluate quality formative and summative assessments that reflect a balance of content knowledge and problem-solving skills

    Implements current best practice instruction and resources (e.g., focus on student needs/goals, classroom priorities, etc.) for the purpose of improving and enhancing student learning in alignment with state and district standards

    Maintains documentation and required reports (e.g. student data and reports; personal teaching certification; etc.) for the purpose of complying with site, district, policy, administrative, state and/or federal statutes and regulations

    Models positive behaviors (e.g. professional/ethical public image; relational skills, including appropriate verbal and written communications; manners; honors diversity and mutual respect, etc.) for the purpose of promoting appropriate social and interpersonal behavior in alignment with district goals

    Participates in a variety of meetings (e.g. team and/or building meetings; professional growth opportunities; parent/teacher conferences; etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information to perform functions

    Responds to emergency situations (e.g. building emergency protocol; fights, suspected child abuse and/or substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution

    Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, harassment, zero tolerance offenses etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to state law and board policies

    Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, etc. and communicates these objectives to students

    Directs teacher assistants, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students

    Performs other duties as assigned

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Bachelor's Degree in Education plus currently hold an appropriate Wisconsin Educator License administered by DPI for this teaching assignment

    Google Workspace for Education experience preferred

    Experience with Student Information Systems for proper documentation of attendance, discipline, grading, guardian communication, etc.
