Description of Work
This position teaches core English/Language Arts skills to students ages 22 and under in an adult correctional setting. Instruction is provided individually, in small groups, and in whole classes, with additional support for students who need remediation or enrichment. The goal is to help students earn their high school equivalency diploma.
We are seeking an English/Language Arts (ELA) Teacher for the Youth School at Richmond Correctional Institution. In this role, you will be a primary point of support for students working toward high school equivalency. Candidates who are flexible, committed, and strong in instructional practice will be most successful in this rewarding educational environment.
Reporting to the School Principal, the English/ Language Arts (ELA) Teacher is a core member of the academic team responsible for implementing and monitoring the school's vision, mission, values, and goals. The teacher must be skilled at organizing and delivering English/ language arts curriculum to groups of students of all ages, creating a flexible program and a learning environment that supports each student's abilities and personal growth within a medium custody male correctional facility. The teacher will also perform any additional duties assigned by the principal.
This position is located within the academic school at Richmond Correctional Institution, Hoffman, NC (Richmond County).

Salary to be determined by qualifications and years of experience within a range of $49,200 to $76,128.
Salary Grade: Based on NCDPI Salary Schedule
Compensation for all certified educators working for NCDAC in school educator positions is based on the NC Department of Public Instruction's Salary Schedule. This schedule is approved annually by the NC General Assembly and sets pay based on the educator's years of experience and education level.
Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.
The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required.

About the Department of Adult Correction (DAC)
The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons, Correction Enterprises, the Division of Community Supervision, and the Division of Rehabilitation & Reentry.
ABOUT Richmond Correctional Institution:
Located on a 175-acre tract in Hoffman, NC, near Rockingham (Richmond County), Richmond Correctional Institution houses up to 833 male offenders, primarily between 18 and 25 years of age, in medium and minimum custody.
The prison provides vocational classes in brick masonry, electric service, industrial maintenance, upholstery and cooking. Offenders may also attend school, with instruction provided by DAC teachers and Richmond Community College instructors; instruction focuses on adult education and preparation for high school equivalency tests well as life skills and transition services. Richmond Correctional Institution is home to one of the prison system's four schools for young adult offenders.

Minimum Education and Experience

The successful applicant must possess a bachelor's degree or above (from an appropriately accredited college) in the teaching area associated with this position and must hold a current (non-expired) State of North Carolina Professional Educator's License (Class Code A, M, S, or D) with certification in the area of English/ language arts at the middle or high school level or be eligible to obtain an Emergency or Residency teaching license or Provisional Certification in the aforementioned certification area(s). This must be indicated in and attached to your application.
Eligibility requirements for the Emergency and Residency Licenses are:
Emergency One-Year License Eligibility: the candidate must
(1) hold a bachelor's degree with 18 hours of coursework relevant to the requested licensure area (but has not completed a recognized educator preparation program) and
(2) does not qualify for a Residency License
Residency License Eligibility: the candidate must
(1) hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university;
(2) have completed 24 hours of coursework relevant to the requested area of licensure OR passed the content area examination relevant to the requested licensure area that has been approved by the State Board of Education;
(3) be enrolled in a recognized Educator Preparation Program (EPP).
This position is governed under Chapter 115c, Elementary and Secondary Education, and Chapter 126 of the NC State Human Resources Act.
