Job Title: Enterprise Project Manager / Interim Director of Research Computing
Location: Columbia, SC 29208 Hybrid – 3 Days Onsite per Week
Duration: 6 Months (Extension Possible)
Interview Process: 1 Round – In Person
Candidate Eligibility: Must currently reside in SC, NC, or GA, or be willing to relocate to SC before starting at their own expense.
Key Responsibilities- Provide executive leadership for research computing operations, infrastructure, and services.
- Lead organizational transformation, cultural improvements, and change management initiatives.
- Supervise managers, technical professionals, and student staff.
- Evaluate departmental operations, staffing, technology infrastructure, and active projects.
- Establish governance frameworks, operational procedures, and performance accountability.
- Improve IT service delivery, service desk processes, reporting, and customer satisfaction.
- Develop departmental priorities, performance metrics, budgets, and resource allocation strategies.
- Ensure compliance with university policies, security standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Identify operational challenges and implement structural improvements.
- Provide executive reports, strategic recommendations, and organizational assessments.
- Mentor employees, support professional development, and strengthen team collaboration.
- Develop succession plans and transition documentation for the permanent Director.
Required Skills- 8+ years of experience leading organizational transformation, change management, and service delivery optimization.
- 8+ years of experience leading large, complex technology projects.
- 8+ years of experience with personnel management, coaching, and performance accountability.
- Completed Bachelor's degree (mandatory).
Preferred Skills- Experience with research cyberinfrastructure, high-performance computing (HPC), high-speed storage, and networking technologies.
- Experience implementing governance and operational maturity frameworks.
- Experience managing organizational change in higher education.
- Master's degree in Science, Technology, or a related field.
- ITIL knowledge or certification.
- Cloud infrastructure experience with AWS and/or Azure.
- AI infrastructure experience with AWS, Azure, and/or Google Cloud.
- Carpentries Instructor experience or certification.
- Training in HPC technologies, including Slurm and InfiniBand.
