Job Title: CNC Operator I (Entry Level)
 
 
POSITION PURPOSE
 
First of three levels of CNC machining center operator. Operates and adjusts semi-automatic or automatic numerically controlled machine tools to perform standard and repetitive sequences of operations where programs are provided and setups are often made and maintained by others. Requires knowledge of operations include drilling, boring and milling, turning, etc., employing recognized tooling and procedures and where tolerances are close, but not difficult to maintain. Checks parts for conformance to specifications. Typically requires the ability to follow written instructions and read blueprint specifications.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITES
Include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.
 
  • Interprets complicated drawings, program sheets, instructions, and process sheets to determine work to be done.
 
  • Performs a variety of operations on CNC machining centers.
 
  • Performs a variety of milling, drilling, boring, or related operations to close and interrelated tolerances.
 
  • Production quotas required. 
 
  • Install and change cutting tools in machine spindle or magazine.
 
  • Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions, such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
 
  • Performs a variety of inspection and gaging operations to insure maintenance of quality standards and specifications.
 
  • Measures workpiece for conformance to specifications.
 
  • Notifies supervisor of discrepancies.
 
  • Machines materials other than metal, such as composites, plastic, and rubber.
 
  • Cleans machine, tooling, and parts.
 
  • Performs machine maintenance.
 
DUTIES AND TASKS
  • Duties and tasks are varied but standardized. 
  • Works on assignments that are semi-routine in nature where ability to recognize deviation from accepted practice is required. 
 
SUPERVISION GIVEN AND RECEIVED
Receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments. 
 
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Skills/ Knowledge:
  • Has learned the basic skills and routine tasks necessary.
  • Understanding of process flow. 
 
Language Ability:
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  
  • Ability to read and write required. English is preferred. Bi-lingual Spanish a plus.
 
Math Ability:
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts. 
  • Basic math understanding. 

 
Reasoning Ability: 
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. 
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: 
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Knowledge of Windows 10.
 
Certificates and Licenses: 
  • None required. 
 
Education:
  • High School diploma or GED desired.
 
Work Environment:
  • Machine shop environment.
  • Machine noise. 
  • Working with coolant and oils and other chemicals as needed.

Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to stand for 8 hours while working at the machine center. 
  • Lift up to 50 lbs.
