Distribution Fielder / Technician / Planner

Position Overview

The Distribution Fielder / Technician / Planner supports the inspection, documentation, and reporting of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems. This role is responsible for collecting accurate field data, performing visual inspections, and assisting with minor work order development to support the maintenance and reliability of utility infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform technical field activities related to the inspection, operation, and maintenance of electrical distribution systems, including:

  • Conducting system inventories and audits

  • Capturing site photographs and documenting field conditions

  • Inspecting subsurface and pad-mounted equipment

  • Completing ground-line and overhead pole inspections

  • Verifying service drops and meter numbers

  • Validating mapping data against field conditions

  • Prioritize safety in all field and office activities, adhering to company and client safety standards

  • Collect and input field data using tools such as TruPulse laser devices, tablets, GPS units, and digital cameras, ensuring alignment with client requirements

  • Develop a working knowledge of CPUC General Order 95 (GO 95), utility construction standards, and joint-use systems (telecom and cable)

  • Operate equipment to measure utility poles and associated attachments

  • Inspect underground and pad-mounted equipment (e.g., transformers, switches, utility boxes)

  • Participate in safety briefings and team meetings

  • Complete assigned work efficiently to meet project timelines and client expectations

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, designers, technicians, and stakeholders

  • Perform routine inspections of assigned vehicles to ensure safe operation

  • Follow established quality assurance and safety protocols

  • Coordinate with client representatives to obtain required customer information

  • Professionally engage with customers to obtain property access for inspections

  • Schedule and manage field appointments to support project timelines

  • Maintain accurate daily updates in project tracking systems

  • Submit weekly expense reports for project and administrative costs

  • Support additional project needs and responsibilities as assigned

Required Skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 0-1 year of field experience; utility or related experience preferred
  • Familiarity with field survey tools (e.g., range finders, GPS units, tablets, measuring devices)

Additional Qualifications

  • Ability to work extended field hours (10+ hours) in varying terrain and weather conditions, including standing, walking, and hiking
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, property owners, and stakeholders
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including proficiency with email, Microsoft Teams, and mobile tools
  • High attention to detail with a strong commitment to data accuracy and quality
  • Familiarity with NESC and/or CPUC GO 95 standards preferred
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Jose, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $26.00/hr.
