Position Details:

Salary Range: $33.65 - $43.65 Hourly + Excellent Benefits

  • 3% Cost of Living adjustment increase effective 7/12/27
  • Generally, salary placement is at the beginning of the salary range.
  • Advanced placement may be granted depending on related education and experience.
  • NOTE: The City recently completed a compensation study comparing its salary ranges with those of other local agencies. As a result, 87% of salary ranges will be adjusted upward at various intervals. As ranges are adjusted, job postings will be updated to reflect these changes.

Bilingual Stipend: $50.00/month. This position is designated as bilingual, and the candidate must be fluent in Spanish or another foreign language to be eligible for selection. A language proficiency test will be administered to verify fluency.

Status: Full‑time, Regular

Schedule: 9/80 work schedule with alternating Friday off

Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education/Training:

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college-level coursework in chemistry, biology, environmental science or a related field.

Experience:

  • Two years of increasingly responsible environmental inspection, sampling, and enforcement experience.

Licenses or Certificates:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Grade I Environmental Compliance Inspector certificate within one year of hire.
  • Possession of a CWEA Grade II Environmental Compliance Inspector certificate is desirable.

Environmental Compliance Inspector

Ideal Candidate:

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess:

  • College-level coursework in environmental science, biology, chemistry, water resource management, or a closely related field
  • A broad understanding of environmental regulations, including water conservation and efficiency, stormwater, wastewater pretreatment, solid waste and recycling, and hazardous materials/waste
  • The ability to interpret, explain, and apply federal, state, and local environmental and water policies, standards, rules, and regulations
  • Clear and concise communication skills, both oral and written
  • Experience responding to complaints related to water waste, illicit discharges, odors, and hazardous materials in both public and private sectors
  • The ability to handle difficult or unusual situations involving businesses, residents, and City personnel with professionalism and tact
  • Defining characteristics such as dependability, a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and the ability to follow directions with transparency
