Hourly Range: $36.92 - $54.42

The successful candidate's placement in the salary range will depend upon previous experience in a similar role.

DESCRIPTION / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This position supervises staff responsible for managing the Fats, Oils and Grease inspection program, Tempe Grease Cooperative and other environmental support programs. These programs ensures compliance with Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, Environmental Protection Agency, Maricopa County and City Code requirements through required inspections and reporting.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following

  • Assign staff schedules, monitor workflows and quality of work, evaluate performance, coordinate training and manage hiring, performance improvement and disciplinary matters.
  • Leads inspections and investigations related to environmental concerns, including wastewater and stormwater discharges, or other potential violations.
  • Document compliance efforts, analyze findings, and create reports and presentations for City officials and the public.
  • Research, develop, update and review of standard operating procedures, workflows and job hazard analysis.
  • Recommend and assist in the development and implementation of organizational goals and objectives.
  • Develop and implement processes to increase the efficiency of the industrial billing program, food service establishment inspections, Tempe Grease Cooperative, plan review and underground inspection activities, public record request responses and bio-intel logistics.
  • Investigate requests and inquiries from customers, ensure timely and appropriate responses, communicate effectively with customers and other stakeholders.
  • Serve as a contact for regulatory agencies, provide information, reports, and supporting enforcement actions.
  • May perform responsibilities of a similar nature and level as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Experience:

Four (4) years of experience in environmental compliance, administering a pretreatment program, or related experience.

Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year). The sum of an applicant's full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience.

Education:

Equivalent to an associate or vocational/technical school degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Sciences, or related field.

The term "equivalent" means that directly related work experience exceeding the required work experience will substitute in equal one-year increments for college-level education (2 additional years for an associate degree and 4 additional years for a bachelor's degree).

Professional Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • Valid drivers license
  • Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade I Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification
  • Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade I Water Distribution System Operator Certification
  • Backflow Specialist Certification from a State of Arizona agency, obtain within one year.
  • OSHA - 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) Certification or HAZWOPER Refresher Certification, obtain within one (1) year.
  • Maricopa County, Air Quality Department - Dust Control Compliance Certification, obtain within one (1) year.
