Job Description

If you are motivated and keen on offering environmental compliance assistance for the City's Erosion and Stormwater Management Ordinances (MS4), think about becoming an Environmental Construction Inspector with the Public Works Environmental Quality Services team!

Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for coordinating with contractors, developers and builders to conduct routine Erosion and Sediment Control and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) inspections for properties under construction.
  • Must have the ability to develop positive working relationships with staff from Public Works, Development and Permits, and the VA Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to coordinate Erosion and Stormwater Management Ordinance and Virginia Erosion and Stormwater Management Program enforcement.
  • Coordinates with City staff from Public Works and Development and Permits to accomplish goals, communicate information, and coordinate interdepartmental Erosion and Stormwater Management Ordinance enforcement.
  • Investigates citizen complaints into Erosion and Sediment Control and Stormwater Violations.
  • Prepares correspondence and maintains database reports and records such as erosion and sediment control routine inspection forms and SWPPP inspections records.
  • Reviews erosion and sediment control and stormwater management construction design plans and sequence of construction.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standard, this position requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards; Certification as a Dual Erosion and Sediment Control and Stormwater Inspector within 6 months of completing the DEQ courses.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
