About the Agency
The Pearl River Valley Water Supply District provides water to the City of Jackson for treatment and distribution, serves over 5,800 water customers in four systems, and provides recreational opportunities for over 2,250,000 annual visitors. The Ross Barnett Reservoir is a 33,000-acre impoundment at the heart of the District on the Pearl River just north of Jackson. Ownership and operation of the reservoir, its shoreline, and the 17,000 acres of surrounding property is vested in the District. The District member counties include Hinds, Madison, Rankin, Scott, and Leake counties. The District is responsible for the maintenance of the reservoir dam, spillway, approximately 50 public areas and entrances, 5 campgrounds, and 4 water/sewer systems. The spillway control tower, Reservoir Patrol, and the 5 campgrounds are staffed 24 hours a day. About the Position
The Engineer in Training position is an entry-level, full-time role within the District's Engineering Department. The primary duty station for this role is the District's main administrative office, located at 6018 Lakeshore Park in Rankin County. Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Chief Engineer, the Engineer in Training will perform a wide range of engineering tasks and support functions. Core responsibilities and duties include: Inspecting District infrastructure and facilities. Observing, monitoring, and evaluating construction and repair operations. Reviewing engineering plans, technical reports, and project documentation. Preparing comprehensive engineering reports, technical specifications, and project plans. Soliciting bids and formal proposals from prospective vendors and contractors. Collecting, processing, and analyzing relevant engineering data, as well as obtaining environmental samples (water, soil, or other materials) as required. Attending professional meetings and delivering technical presentations to staff, PRVWSD Board and stakeholders. Cataloging, managing, and archiving engineering plans, construction records, and utility asset inventories. Maintaining and updating the District's Geographic Information System (GIS) database.
What youll need to be Successful
A successful applicant must have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination and possess a working knowledge of basic engineering principals such as physics, statics, and hydrodynamics. Applicants must demonstrate an understanding of basic engineering calculations such as determining areas and volumes. Applicants must be able to learn to read and understand construction drawings and specifications. Applicants should understand the basic properties and uses of common construction materials such as soils, concrete, asphalt, wood, PVC and steel. Applicants must be competent in basic computer skills including creation, manipulation and storage of documents, spreadsheets, data bases, and other types of electronic files. Applicants should be proficient in the use of internet and on-line search applications. Ability to use artificial intelligence (AI) applications, or learn to do so, is preferred. Applicants must demonstrate good oral and written communication skills. A sound work ethic is essential. Applicants must be willing to learn and to work outside around water and wildlife for moderate periods. Applicants must be willing to travel by boat and work over water for short periods. Applicants must be able to work with staff members of various fields and levels of experience. Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and be able to operate passenger vehicles and light trucks. Demonstrated willingness to acquire new professional skills. Proven ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment. Flexibility to adapt to varying work schedules and operational demands. Exceptional organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Typically requires a Bachelors Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in engineering, preferably with courses in environmental engineering and possession of a certificate of registration as an Engineer in Training from the Mississippi State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
