Job Description
The Chesapeake Public Works Department is seeking a motivated and environmentally conscious professional to join our team as an Environmental Engineering Technician III! As an Environmental Engineering Technician III, you will support the City's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Compliance Program through field inspections, environmental investigations, stormwater sampling, and public outreach efforts. This Environmental Engineering Technician III position is ideal for someone who enjoys a balance of independent fieldwork, technical responsibilities, and customer interaction.
The successful Environmental Engineering Technician III candidate will conduct inspections and assessments of public and private stormwater management facilities, stormwater structures, and stormwater outfalls throughout the City of Chesapeake. Responsibilities include preparing reports of findings and coordinating maintenance needs with City divisions and private property owners.
This Environmental Engineering Technician III position also investigates illicit discharges, pollution complaints, environmental spills, and customer service concerns. The selected candidate will conduct dry weather screening inspections, perform field sampling of stormwater, coordinate with state agencies and City departments, and assist with enforcing City stormwater regulations and codes.
In addition, the Environmental Engineering Technician III will help educate citizens, businesses, and City staff on stormwater management, pollution prevention, and environmental best practices. Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree in engineering or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Specialized certifications may be necessary based on departmental requirements. Ability to obtain Virginia DEQ Stormwater Inspector Certification and DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector Certification within one year. Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
