Primary Purpose of Organization Unit
The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Professional assists with the administration of the university wide environmental health and safety program to establish and maintain a safe, healthy working, learning and living environment for Faculty, Staff and Students through the identification and correction of unsafe conditions, maintenance of an occupational health program, safety training, accident prevention, regulatory control and the provision of consultative services to the management of the university on health and safety matters.
Primary Purpose of Position
This position serves as a technical expert to identify and interpret federal, state and local safety and health regulations and codes, and also assist the University community with their applications. Work involves emergency response, risk analysis, environmental program management, fire safety, industrial hygiene, emergency preparedness and other programs. Employee conducts inspections to identify areas that may not be in compliance with local, state and federal regulations and employer policies, in order to correct these areas. This position assists with the development of policies, plans and procedures to assure a comprehensive program that covers all areas of the university, including research, laboratory, radiation, biological, healthcare, hazardous waste management, emergency response, maintenance, new construction, and residential life safety is in place and maintained. The EHS Professional works to ensure Fire/Life, and Safety equipment is maintained and in good working order by conducting inspections of campus work areas to minimize hazards to campus personnel. They also assist in conducting training for campus personnel and assist in fostering and maintaining an atmosphere and culture of Safety Awareness across campus. This position reports to the University EHS Director.
Job Description
Promote Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) within all UNCP facilities and represent management in Occupational Health and Safety matters. Conducts annual school/building inspections and prepares and distributes inspection reports; including follow-up activities.
Responds to all emergency inspections and requests and reports to committees and management. Investigates and makes recommendations to matters related to indoor air quality and environmental concerns expressed by employees. Assists the EHS director, senior administrators, principals and other financial managers/supervisors in emergency planning. Prepares guidelines to assist financial managers and other supervisors in the development of safety plans for their respective buildings. Evaluates the efficiency of all emergency plans in the systems and makes recommendations regarding suggested amendments. Assists with conducting accident reports and maintaining OSHA records. Prepares monthly Safety Performance Reports; makes recommendations for appropriate action. Supervises and participates in accident investigations and evaluates accident causes. Works with departments in preventing accidents and losses to persons and property. Performs facilities inspections including review of Safety Data Sheets and performance of departments to ensure compliance with Right-to-Know Law. Prepares reports and makes recommendations for corrective action. Conducts or coordinates various training programs for employees and supervisors in occupational safety requirements such as maintenance of, defensive driving, forklift training, hazardous communication, workers compensation and accident reporting. Investigate and report on safety hazards reported by staff, faculty and students with recommendation for appropriate corrective action or abatement steps.
This position is designated as Mandatory Personnel. Mandatory Employees are employees whose presence has been determined to be mandatory to University operations during certain types of adverse weather or emergency events.
