Environmental Health & Safety Manager

Job Summary

This position manages the coordination and execution of EHS projects and other duties as assigned. Reporting to the Vice President of Facilities Services, the Environmental Health and Safety Manager will support the development of EHS policies and the implementation and administration of the Colleges Environmental Health and Safety Program. The EHS Manager works closely with and advises the Vice President of Facilities Services to ensure that the College maintains compliance with Local, County, State, and Federal Health and Safety regulations, as well as provide relevant programs and training to the entire College community.

Essential Responsibilities

Policy Development and Coordination of Tasks

  • Occupational safety includes Hazardous Communications, Ergonomics, Bloodborne Pathogens, Respiratory Protection, Confined Space, Lockout/Tagout, Defensive Driving, First Aid/CPR, Fire Safety, Fall Protection, and Forklift Training.
  • Supports the development and administration of Environmental, Health and Safety policies, programs and training that include Occupational Safety and Environmental Safety standards as appropriate.
  • Supports the design of post-laboratory, collection and tracking systems of chemicals or hazardous wastes.
  • Coordinates directly with end-users of chemicals, bio-wastes (Faculty and Staff) as to safe handling, labeling, storage and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous (Universal Waste) materials in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Maintains records and a database of employee training, medical examinations, licenses and certifications.
  • Prepares and submits to the County Haz-Mat Division the annual report.

Coordination of Audits, Inspections and Training

  • Coordinates and delivers support and training for a wide range of Health and Safety concerns. The primary areas include laboratory safety, general workplace safety, compliance with environmental regulations and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Directs/Supervises campus safety inspections for all facilities and laboratories to identify recognized safety hazards/loss exposures.
  • Provides recommendations to managers and supports implementation of appropriate corrective actions.
  • Conducts audits of corrective actions to ensure compliance with regulations and corrective actions.
  • Consults/reviews with contractors and vendors regarding safety related issues while they work on campus.
  • Coordinates testing, for potentially hazardous situations or the presence of hazardous.

Conducts Inspections and Trainings

  • Inspection of Fire Extinguishers, Fire Alarms, AEDs, First Aid kits, Campus Blue Light poles.
  • Provides Office ergonomic assessments to employees.
  • Sets the appointment schedule and conducts evaluations of the individual computer set up, task chair, desk and personal working routines.
  • Makes corrective recommendations and orders for appropriate equipment.
  • Manages the budget for the Environmental Health and Safety Department as well as the budget for ergonomics.
  • Chairs the Building Coordinators Team responsible for maintaining interactive communication about safety with the staff and designing and supporting programs which reinforce safety.
  • Selects training topics and schedules speakers/trainers and occasionally conducts and/or supports training sessions.
  • When notified responds immediately to all hazardous materials emergencies, and interfaces directly with town and county agencies.

Other Duties as Assigned

Experience and Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree required.

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the safety or health fields.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of all applicable OSHA, EPA, NFPA and Air Quality Standards and Administrative practices as they may relate to Saint Marys College, or ability to learn them within six months of hire.
  • General knowledge of using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to follow Saint Mary's Employee Handbook
  • Basic understanding of laws and regulations applicable to the Environmental Health and Safety field in California.
  • Position may be required to be on call for 24/7 emergency response

Licenses & Certifications:

Federal and State Emergency response training certifications preferred.
