DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • This position will report to the field 90% of the time, rain or shine. Consumer Health is looking for qualified candidates in the following programs: Food, EMS, Special Waste (FOG), POOLS
  • Investigates various establishments and locations to educate operators on City health ordinances and recommends corrective action; performs follow-up inspections; issues warnings or citations.
  • Investigates complaints in public establishments or on private property; explains City health ordinances and recommends corrective action; performs follow-up inspections; issues warnings or citations.
  • May assist with ambulance, mobile food unit, or waste hauler vehicle inspections and surveillance.
  • May issue citations to operators not in compliance with City of Houston Code of Ordinances.
  • Will appear in court for testimony regarding violations; provides testimony in enforcement hearings.
  • Trains new hires.
  • Must cross train in other Consumer Health Programs. May conduct inspections in other programs to assist with Bureau needs.
  • May be required to obtain Registered Sanitarian license within 9 months of employment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

There are occasional exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve infrequent exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires a Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health Engineering or a closely related degree.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Two (2) years of pollution/environmental control experience are required.

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

Grants & Special funded positions are dependent upon continued available funds. If funding is no longer available, employee may be laid off or transferred. Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidates qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
