About the Agency

Located on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in Biloxi, the MDMR manages all marine life, public trust wetlands, adjacent uplands and waterfront areas to provide optimal commercial, recreational, educational and economical uses of these resources that are consistent with environmental concerns and social changes. Our mission is to enhance, protect and conserve the states marine interests.

About the Position

This is a time-limited position. This position provides advanced scientific and technical support to management on a major shellfish resource program within the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources Shellfish Bureau, helping carry out the Departments legislatively mandated mission to manage and grow the states oyster industry. Day to day, the incumbent helps develop and implement on bottom and off bottom oyster aquaculture methods for harvesters and farmers, supports cultch planting and restoration efforts, and assists with water quality monitoring to help protect public health and the sustainability of the resource. The role also plays a part in harvest season management, including recommendations on opening and closing harvest areas, and helps interpret state and federal rules governing shellfish harvest and handling. Working under the direction of management, the incumbent helps plan, assign, and review the work of technical staff, and applies scientific expertise to give practical, defensible guidance to industry and regulatory partners. The incumbent coordinates closely with other Department bureaus and offices, control authorities, and special interest groups, and recommends substantive program policy in line with state and federal regulations and decisions of the Advisory Commission on Marine Resources. The position reports to and is subject to periodic review by an Environmental/Natural Resources Team Lead.

What youll need to be Successful

Knowledge of on-bottom and off-bottom shellfish methods. Good communication skills and effective supervision of staff and a variety of functions are essential to adequately perform in this position.
