Environmental Outreach Officer

POSITION SUMMARY

The Environmental Outreach Officer is under the direct supervision of the Environmental Manager and the general supervision of the Tribal Administrator. Incumbent shall assist in the coordination of environmental outreach activities and other activities assigned by the Environmental Manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Assists on all EPA projects, as identified by the Tribe's objectives.

2. Oversees the Tribal Community Garden.

3. Leads all grant tasks.

4. Conducts public outreach through educational workshops.

5. Conducts youth outreach through planned educational activities.

6. Researches potential funding sources and possible youth activities.

7. Conducts the planning process for current and future funding.

8. Writes basic environmental grants.

9. Provides assistance to supervisor with written reports, comments, meetings, community awareness, mailings to the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians members, etc.

10. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with state, tribal, federal and local public and private agencies.

11. Assists with monitoring construction projects on the Rancheria.

12. Works collaboratively with co-workers and other staff members.

13. Assists in writing drafts and updates policies and procedures annually on environmental issues.

14. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent required. Some college or technical school preferred. At least (1) one-year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience required. Experience working with youth programs preferred.

Must be at least 18 years of age.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. This includes:

• Knowledge of the local community and community issues.
• Knowledge of the tribal government and participation in community issues.
• Ability to speak and write effectively, and to prepare clear, concise written reports.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with state, tribal, federal agencies, and other individuals.
• Ability to assist on diverse projects.
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather elements.
• Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
• Ability to follow written instructions and to organize assignments for supervisor.
• Ability to express ideas effectively, orally, and as necessary, in writing.

NATIVE PREFERENCE

Preference in hiring is given to either the most qualified applicant or a Native American candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. When two (2) or more Native American candidates have comparable qualifications, the following order of preference shall apply: (1) Members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (2) Spouses or domestic partners (certified through Tribal Court) of members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (3) Parents of children of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (4) All other documented Native Americans; (5) All other applicants in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code, Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Native preference must submit verification of Indian eligibility.
