Nature of Work
This is an advanced technical position involved with sampling, laboratory analysis, data analysis, and monitoring of environmental quality in various types of water and solids. Work includes investigating water quality problems, calibration and troubleshooting of equipment. This work is performed under the supervision of the Lab Superintended.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
- Operates, cleans, calibrates and maintains sampling and testing equipment.
- Collects, monitors and analyzes solids and all types of water samples.
- Prepares, maintains, and reviews data, records, and reports related to the work.
- Performs quality assurance and quality control checks for equipment and data validation.
- Keeps abreast of state and federal publications and regulations regarding environmental pollution.
- Makes public presentations regarding the environment to schools and public service organizations; attends public meetings; provides information through educational tours.
- Performs a variety of laboratory tests on water and other substances.
- Operates a variety of laboratory equipment; records measurements and other data.
- Conducts a variety of tests on water in various stages of treatment to ensure that environmental standards are met; tests sludge and other treatment by-products.
- Prepares or assists in the preparation of reports of daily test results.
- Collects samples; prepares reagents, standards, and test solutions used in the testing process.
- Performs mathematical calculations based on raw laboratory data.
- Responds to emergency environmental pollution situations and takes action as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Training and Experience
Required Education and Experience
- Associate's degree in environmental or physical science
- -AND--
- Three (3) years of experience in environmental monitoring and testing
- -OR--
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience
