Job Description and Duties

The Environmental Chemistry Laboratory (ECL), Berkeley provides DTSC with expertise in method development, quality assurance, data evaluation and analysis of environmental samples. ECL also studies new chemicals of concern and provides DTSC management with analytical information for decision making.

As an Environmental Scientist you will have the opportunity to:

  • Assist in drafting and maintaining the documents and records required by ISO/IEC 17025 Laboratory Quality Management System
  • Review quality system procedures (QSPs), technical system procedures (TSPs) and form with instructions (FRMs) for effectiveness and efficiency and make recommendations for improvement
  • Participate in process and program improvements, proficiency testing, internal audits, external assessments, and management review meetings
  • Attend or provide training on ECL ISO/IEC 17025 Quality Management System
  • Assist with tracking, organizing and archiving all records including, but not limited to, test method validation records, analytical testing reports, training records, complaints, equipment and instrument calibration and verification records, and logbooks
  • Assist with the development of a laboratory information management system (LIMS) to document lab practices and procedures, track performance data and manage records

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

  • Experience working in a laboratory
  • Preferred Experience with using standard methods (e.g., EPA, CDC, ASTM, USP) to test environmental samples
  • Preferred Experience with working in laboratory with a Quality Management System.
  • Experience with providing customer/client services

Working Conditions

Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month.
