Job Title: Environmental Scientist

Job Description

This Environmental Scientist position offers a dynamic blend of fieldwork and office-based responsibilities, focusing on environmental site assessments and technical reporting. You will conduct Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), analyze environmental data, and support remediation decisions while working closely with experienced industry professionals. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented environmental professional who enjoys both hands-on sampling and in-depth technical writing, with clear opportunities for career growth into project management.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), including site inspections, historical research, and database reviews in accordance with ASTM standards.
  • Perform Phase II ESAs, including soil, groundwater, and vapor sampling, and coordinate all aspects of field investigations.
  • Analyze environmental data, interpret laboratory results, and prepare clear, accurate, and technically sound reports.
  • Identify Recognized Environmental Conditions (RECs) and recommend appropriate next steps for site remediation or additional assessment.
  • Collaborate with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure projects comply with applicable environmental standards and regulations.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, maintaining schedules, meeting deadlines, and supporting budget adherence.
  • Prepare detailed Phase I and Phase II ESA reports, ensuring consistency with regulatory and ASTM requirements.
  • Contribute to environmental monitoring and remediation activities, including soil sampling and environmental consulting tasks as needed.
  • Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment, sharing findings and supporting collaborative problem-solving.
  • Engage in professional networking and relationship building to support ongoing and future environmental projects.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geology, or a related field.
  • 2-5 years of experience in environmental consulting or environmental site assessments.
  • Hands-on experience conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.
  • Familiarity with ASTM E1527-21 standards and relevant environmental regulations such as CERCLA and RCRA.
  • Strong technical writing skills with demonstrated experience preparing ESA reports.
  • Ability to interpret laboratory data and provide practical, actionable recommendations.
  • Proficiency in GIS software and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Experience with environmental science practices, soil sampling, environmental remediation, and environmental monitoring.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to interact effectively with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
  • Solid project management skills, including the ability to organize tasks, manage time, and handle multiple projects concurrently.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or willingness to obtain this certification.
  • Experience in Phase I and Phase II ESA report writing with a focus on clarity and regulatory compliance.
  • Interest in career progression into a Project Manager role and taking on greater responsibility over time.
  • Motivation to learn directly from highly experienced environmental professionals and apply that knowledge to complex projects.

Work Environment

The work environment offers a balanced mix of field and office-based work, with approximately 1-2 days per week spent on site conducting sampling and field investigations. The remaining days can be performed remotely, providing a very flexible and supportive work setting. The role typically involves a roughly 50/50 split between field activities and office tasks, with a strong emphasis on technical writing and report preparation. You will collaborate closely with a consultant who primarily works remotely and with senior environmental professionals who bring decades of industry experience. The culture is that of a small, family-oriented organization where you can learn directly from seasoned experts, grow into a project management role, and build a strong professional network within the environmental and construction industries.
