Job Title: Environmental ScientistJob Description

This role offers an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented Environmental Scientist who enjoys a balanced mix of fieldwork and office-based responsibilities. You will lead and support Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), interpret complex environmental data, and develop clear, actionable technical reports. The position provides strong exposure to clients and regulatory agencies, significant technical writing responsibilities, and a clear pathway to grow into a project management role within a close-knit, supportive team.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) in accordance with ASTM standards, including performing site inspections, completing historical research, and reviewing environmental database records.
  • Plan and execute Phase II ESAs, including soil, groundwater, and vapor sampling, and coordinate all aspects of field investigations.
  • Analyze environmental data, interpret laboratory results, and translate findings into clear, concise technical reports that meet regulatory and client requirements.
  • Identify Recognized Environmental Conditions (RECs) and develop practical recommendations for site remediation, risk management, or further assessment.
  • Prepare high-quality Phase I and Phase II ESA reports, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and consistency with applicable standards and regulations.
  • Collaborate closely with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure projects comply with ASTM standards and relevant environmental regulations such as CERCLA and RCRA.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, including scheduling, budgeting, and resource coordination, while consistently meeting deadlines and project objectives.
  • Apply proficiency in GIS and Microsoft Office tools to support data analysis, mapping, and report preparation.
  • Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing environmental expertise and supporting colleagues on complex projects.
  • Participate in environmental monitoring and remediation activities as needed, including soil sampling, data collection, and documentation.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, providing reasoned recommendations based on data and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous learning by leveraging mentorship from experienced environmental professionals and sharing knowledge with team members.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geology, or a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience in environmental consulting or site assessments.
  • Hands-on experience conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, including field sampling and report writing.
  • Familiarity with ASTM E1527-21 standards and relevant environmental regulations, including CERCLA and RCRA.
  • Strong technical writing skills with demonstrated experience preparing comprehensive ESA reports.
  • Ability to interpret laboratory data for soil, groundwater, and vapor samples and develop practical, actionable recommendations.
  • Proficiency with GIS software for mapping and spatial analysis.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, for documentation, data analysis, and presentation.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with clients, contractors, regulators, and internal teams.
  • Proven project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, deadlines, and budgets.
  • Experience in environmental science, environmental consulting, environmental remediation, and environmental monitoring.
  • Experience with soil sampling, soil sample analysis, and remediation-related activities.
  • Experience writing Phase I and Phase II ESA reports.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment and contributing environmental expertise to integrated project teams.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or a strong willingness to obtain this certification.
  • Interest in developing into a Project Manager role and taking on increased responsibility for client relationships and project delivery.
  • Desire to work closely with and learn directly from highly experienced environmental professionals with extensive industry experience.
  • Ability to balance field and office work effectively, maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through in both technical work and documentation.
  • Interest in building a professional network within the environmental and construction industries.

Work Environment

You will work in a small, collaborative organization that fosters a family-like environment and emphasizes mentorship and professional growth. The role offers a roughly 50/50 split between field and office work, with approximately 1-2 days per week spent on-site performing sampling and field investigations. The remaining time is primarily office-based, with a strong emphasis on technical writing, data analysis, and report preparation. The work schedule is highly flexible, and remote work is a regular part of the role; some team members work predominantly remotely while maintaining close collaboration with colleagues. You will use standard environmental field equipment for soil, groundwater, and vapor sampling, as well as GIS and Microsoft Office tools for analysis and reporting. The position provides frequent opportunities to collaborate with experienced environmental professionals and to interact with a variety of clients and industry partners, supporting both technical development and networking within the environmental sector.
