Environmental Technician

SUMMARY

The Environmental Technician is responsible for supporting environmental compliance, monitoring, sampling, inspections, documentation, and reporting activities within an industrial facility. This position assists in ensuring facility operations comply with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations, company policies, permit requirements, and site-specific environmental programs.

The Environmental Technician works closely with Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS/HSE), Operations, Maintenance, and site leadership to identify environmental concerns, maintain compliance records, and support the facility''s environmental management programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct routine environmental inspections of facility operations, equipment, storage areas, waste accumulation areas, and environmental control systems.
• Collect environmental samples, including air, water, wastewater, stormwater, soil, and waste samples, in accordance with established procedures.
• Perform field testing and monitoring using environmental sampling and measurement equipment.
• Assist with compliance activities related to air emissions, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous waste, and spill prevention programs.
• Maintain accurate environmental records, inspection logs, sampling documentation, and compliance reports.
• Assist with environmental permit requirements and regulatory reporting.
• Monitor and inspect hazardous and non-hazardous waste storage and accumulation areas.
• Assist with the proper labeling, handling, storage, documentation, and disposal of waste materials.
• Conduct routine inspections for leaks, spills, releases, and other potential environmental concerns.
• Support spill prevention, response, containment, cleanup, and reporting activities.
• Assist with Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) program requirements.
• Support stormwater pollution prevention and inspection activities.
• Assist with air emissions monitoring and Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) activities as required.
• Perform inspections of tanks, containers, secondary containment systems, and environmental control equipment.
• Maintain environmental monitoring and sampling equipment in proper working condition.
• Enter environmental data into spreadsheets, databases, and compliance management systems.
• Assist with internal and external environmental audits and regulatory inspections.
• Communicate environmental concerns and potential compliance issues to supervision promptly.
• Support environmental training and awareness programs for employees and contractors.
• Participate in incident investigations involving spills, releases, or environmental events.
• Work with operations and maintenance personnel to correct identified environmental deficiencies.
• Follow all company safety, environmental, and site-specific policies and procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Basic knowledge of environmental regulations and industrial environmental compliance practices.
• Understanding of environmental sampling, monitoring, and inspection procedures.
• Ability to accurately collect, document, and maintain environmental data.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to read and understand environmental procedures, permits, safety data sheets (SDS), and regulatory requirements.
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and electronic recordkeeping systems.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to identify potential environmental concerns and escalate issues appropriately.
• Willingness to work outdoors and in active industrial environments.
• Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, or emergency response situations as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Associate''s or bachelor''s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Technology, Chemistry, Biology, Occupational Safety, or a related field preferred.
• Minimum 1-3 years of environmental, industrial, laboratory, sampling, waste management, or regulatory compliance experience preferred.
• Experience in a chemical plant, refinery, petrochemical facility, manufacturing plant, power generation facility, or other heavy industrial environment preferred.
• Knowledge of EPA and applicable state environmental regulations preferred.
• Experience with hazardous waste management, stormwater, wastewater, air compliance, or environmental sampling preferred.
• HAZWOPER 40-hour certification preferred or may be required.
• TWIC card may be required depending on the facility.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and elevated platforms.
• Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and bend.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to wear required PPE, including respiratory protection when necessary.
• Ability to work around industrial equipment, chemicals, and active operating areas.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Industrial facilities, refineries, chemical plants, petrochemical facilities, manufacturing plants, terminals, and other heavy industrial environments.
• Exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, chemicals, process equipment, and industrial hazards.
• Work may be performed in operating units, laboratories, wastewater treatment areas, tank farms, warehouses, and outdoor environmental monitoring locations.
• Required use of PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toe boots, hearing protection, and other site-specific protective equipment.
