Job summary: The Environmental Test Technician is a hands-on, detail-oriented professional responsible for performing vibration, shock, and other environmental tests on satellite components and hardware. This role supports the design, development, and production of reliable aerospace hardware by ensuring all components can withstand the harsh conditions of launch and space operations. The technician will work closely with the engineering team to set up complex tests, operate state-of-the-art equipment, and accurately document all testing processes and results.
Key responsibilities:
Test execution:
Set up and operate vibration test equipment, including electrodynamic shakers, pneumatic systems, and shock machines.
Program and operate vibration and environmental controllers for sine, random, and shock tests.
Conduct comprehensive environmental tests, including thermal, thermal vacuum (TVAC), and humidity testing, using automated and manual equipment.
Instrumentation and setup:
Prepare and instrument satellite hardware and test fixtures with sensors such as accelerometers, load cells, and strain gauges.
Assemble and calibrate data acquisition (DAQ) systems for accurate data collection.
Install, maintain, and troubleshoot test instrumentation and electrical harnessing.
Documentation and analysis:
Record and document test procedures, data, and results with meticulous attention to detail.
Support engineers in analyzing test data and troubleshooting any anomalies or failures.
Prepare and submit detailed technical reports for engineering review.
Equipment and lab maintenance:
Perform routine maintenance and calibration of lab equipment, including shakers, thermal chambers, and instrumentation.
Assist with the design, evaluation, and build-out of new test equipment and Ground Support Equipment (GSE).
Adhere to strict safety, quality (e.g., ISO), and Foreign Object Debris (FOD) control procedures.
Team collaboration:
Work with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and technicians in a fast-paced environment.
Assist with other assembly, integration, and test (AI&T) activities as required.
Communicate effectively with all team members to maintain testing efficiency and meet project deadlines.
Required qualifications:
High school diploma or GED equivalent. An associate degree in a technical field is a plus.
2+ years of hands-on experience in vibration, shock, or environmental testing, preferably in the aerospace industry.
Proven experience operating vibration test controllers and electrodynamic shakers.
Familiarity with industry standards, such as MIL-STD-810 or NASA GEVS.
Ability to read and interpret technical documents, schematics, and engineering drawings.
Proficiency with computer software, including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and DAQ software.
Strong mechanical aptitude, excellent troubleshooting skills, and meticulous attention to detail.
Ability to perform physical tasks, including standing for long periods and lifting heavy loads (up to 35 lbs).
Preferred qualifications:
Experience with other environmental testing, such as thermal vacuum (TVAC) or burn-in testing.
Proficiency with electrical test equipment, such as oscilloscopes and multimeters.
Experience in a research and development (R&D) or high-volume production environment.
Experience operating heavy equipment, such as cranes and forklifts.
Basic soldering and harness fabrication skills.
