    Job Duties

    The cross-cutting epidemiologist provides support for health information and training
    activities within the Office of Epidemiology’s Division of Surveillance and
    Investigation. This role works to increase the Commonwealth’s ability to develop and
    maintain accurate and timely health information for the various disease programs
    within the Office of Epidemiology and during public health epidemiologic responses.
    The cross-cutting epidemiologist collaborates with local health districts, VDH office
    programs and external organizations to ensure consistent approaches to drafting
    public health guidance documents, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), the Disease
    Control Manual, as well as other procedures, guidelines, and educational materials.
    Responsibilities also include supporting federal grant workplans, carrying out policy
    and program decisions, and supporting emergency preparedness and response
    activities.

    The mid-level epidemiologists is responsible for carrying out a broad and
    moderately complex range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities
    in an assigned district, region or within a statewide program area. Responsibilities
    include conducting epidemiologic investigations and/or assessments, participating
    in surveillance activities, conducting epidemiologic studies to include data analysis
    and dissemination and consulting scientific and technical issues. Positions in this
    role may coordinate a specific epidemiology program within assigned area to
    include interpreting program policies and procedures, training staff, monitoring
    and reviewing data collection /analysts for accuracy and consistency and serving as
    program consultant. Positions in this role work under the limited supervision of a
    lead epidemiologist, program manager, or similar position and perform
    assignments independently, making determinations about scope and direction or
    program planning, research, and investigation, based on agreed upon direction and
    institutional review board approval, as needed. Typically, the work completed is
    reviewed for feasibility, conformance to program policy and practices, and
    effectiveness in meeting specific goals and objectives.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Considerable knowledge of the cause, transmission, treatment, and prevention of communicable and other conditions of public health importance.
    • Considerable knowledge of methods of public health surveillance and disease outbreak investigations.
    • Considerable knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies regarding the reporting and control of disease.
    • Working knowledge of biostatistics, computer data analysis, and data management techniques.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop program goals and objectives and to evaluate program effectiveness.
    • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
    • Demonstrated ability to collect, quality assure, analyze, and present statistical data.
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with health care professionals and the general public.
    • Experience in epidemiology, public health, or a related area.

    Additional Considerations

    • Training/experience in public health, epidemiology, or biostatistics or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead and direct the work of others either in a supervisory or project management capacity.
    • Basic knowledge of statistical software packages.
