Position Summary

The Equine Reproduction Laboratory, Colorado State University, is accepting applications for the Equine Breeding Farm Internship that will begin on Friday, January 8, 2027 and conclude Friday, July 19, 2027. The goal of the program is to provide on-the-job training in equine breeding farm procedures and management. The program is aimed preferentially for people with a sincere desire to pursue a career in the equine breeding industry. Interns will participate in a breeding season internship program. Interns will rotate through 3 shifts of service areas, including a defined rotational schedule of 1) Stallion Service, 2) Mare Service, and 3) Weekend/Overnight Duty. A limited defined amount of on-call duty will be expected, as well. Applicants should have completed a BS degree in Equine Sciences, Animal Science, or related discipline. Candidates must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. at time of application. This is a non-degree program. A certificate of achievement will be provided upon successful completion of the program. Job placement assistance will be available upon request. A salary will be provided, and housing is available on site. Rent is required for the on-site housing.

Training may include:

Stallion handling, Stallion management, semen collection, preparation of cooled-transported semen, semen evaluation, semen freezing, stallion laboratory cleaning protocols, hormone therapy, reproductive management of mares, artificial insemination, embryo transfer management, restraint for farrier work, reproductive management of mares, care of the pregnant mare, overnight foal watch, care of the newborn foal, dystocia management, herd health management, lab and equipment cleaning protocols; use of autoclave, restraining mare for reproductive procedures, such as oocyte pickup, embryo transfer techniques.

Essential Job Duties

• Equine Breeding Farm Interns will provide assistance in the Stallion Service and the Mare Service; duties will include, but are not limited to horse handling, electronic and manual record keeping, administration of medications, routine medical care, restraining for farrier, grooming, blanketing and turn out of horses.
• Interns will assist veterinarians in examination of mares, stallions, and foals, semen collection and evaluation, insemination of mares, hormone therapy, therapeutics transfer of embryos and restraining for reproductive procedures
• Interns will monitor late-term pregnant mares for impending foaling, notify the on-call veterinarian, and provide assistance during foaling, as needed.
• Interns will assist with the medical care of stallions, mares and foals and trailering to the JFEH, if needed.
• Interns will assist with general laboratory functions, including, but not limited to cleaning of lab and stock areas, stocking, equipment cleaning, autoclaving, laundry, power washing and reception, etc

• Essential Services Designation: Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety and welfare.
• CSU Veterinary Health System does not follow standard University Holiday Schedule due to the nature of the business. After hours and weekend work may be required.
• Must safely lift and carry items that weigh up to 50lbs.
• Candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in an equine breeding farm setting, experience handling stallions, mares and foals and/or experience giving IV, IM, and oral medications would be beneficial.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have completed a BS degree in Equine Sciences, Animal Science, or related discipline. Applicant must have at least 5 years of experience being around and handling horses. Applicants must be comfortable around horses and have knowledge of basic horse behavior. Must have a good attitude and work ethic. Must be able to work in a team setting as well as independently. This is a physically demanding job and you must be able to lift at least 50lbs. Applicants must have a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S at the time of the application; the Veterinary Health System will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Salary Range

$18.00 Per Hour
