Under general direction to perform skilled mechanical repair and preventive maintenance work on automotive and heavy equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Equipment Mechanic I

This is the entry level in the class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgement in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have limited work experience. Exercises no supervision.

Equipment Mechanic II

This is the full journey level in the class series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgement and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. May exercise technical and functional oversight of lower-level staff. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the II level are normally filled by advancement from the I level requiring three years of experience, successful performance, management recommendation, and budget availability. When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the II level.

Examples of Duties

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform the full array of mechanical maintenance duties and responsibilities including preventive maintenance and minor and major overhaul of all City vehicles and equipment
• Test, inspect, overhaul and repair internal combustion and other mechanical equipment including diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems and components, emergency lighting and warning devices, air conditioning, water pumps, air and hydraulic brakes, suspension and other systems;
• Diagnose, disassemble, adjust and reassemble equipment.
• Replace component parts on vehicles and equipment; perform engine tune-ups, rebuilding and overhauling; perform safety inspections on vehicles and equipment.
• Analyze vehicle and equipment failures, determine problems and cause, and recommend solutions;
• Complete a variety of records and documents of work performed;
• Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned;
• Clean and wash motorized equipment as necessary;
• Operate motorized equipment in connection with repairs and servicing;
• Change and repair tires; balance wheels;
• Assists on major repairs;
• Order equipment parts and ensure parts are received timely;
• Diagnose, overhaul, repair heavy duty equipment and machinery;
• Troubleshoot air and hydraulic systems on solid waste and other medium to heavy-duty vehicles;
• Diagnose and repair steering and suspension components; and
• Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Mechanic I:

Education:

• Equivalent to a high school diploma.

Experience:

• One year of experience in light, medium and heavy equipment repair.

Licenses and Certificates:

• Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California drivers license at the time of appointment;

• Possession and maintenance of a valid California Commercial drivers license or the ability to obtain and maintain within one (1) year of appointment.

• Possession of an appropriate Automative Service Excellence Certification (A.S.E.) is desirable.

Mechanic II:

Education:

• Equivalent to a high school diploma.

Experience:

• Three years of experience in light, medium and heavy equipment repair.

Licenses and Certificates:

• Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California drivers license at the time of appointment;

• Possession and maintenance of a valid California Commercial drivers license, or the ability to obtain and maintain within one (1) year of appointment.

• Possession of an appropriate Automative Service Excellence Certification (A.S.E.) is desirable.

• Possession of an Airbrake Certificate is desirable.

• Possession of an Air Conditioning Certificate is desirable.

Special Requirements:

Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, and lift 75 pounds;
• Exposure to outdoors, heat, noise, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards;
• Ability to travel to different sites and locations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

• Operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of light, medium and heavy equipment used in City government, such as solid waste refuse trucks, and public safety (Police and Fire).
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the area of mechanical repair and maintenance;
• Practices, methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of automotive and power equipment;
• Principles and procedures of preventive maintenance related to automotive and power equipment;
• Operating and repair characteristics of hydraulic systems, high pressure air systems, and high-pressure water systems;
• Operation and care of internal combustion engines and hydraulic equipment;
• Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work;
• Safe driving principles and practices; and
• Occupational hazards and standard safety precautions.

Skill to:

• Operate a variety of automotive, truck, and heavy equipment and testing equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Ability to:

• Perform skilled mechanical repair and preventive maintenance work on automotive and heavy equipment;
• Work independently in the absence of supervision;
• Diagnose and troubleshoot gas and diesel and mechanical problems;
• Read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics and fabrication blueprint;
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and
• Establish, maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
