Position Summary

Inspect vehicles and make minor repairs to small and medium powered equipment; provide warehouse supplies to fields crews; maintain warehouse supply records and perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

  • Perform maintenance and repair duties involving gasoline and diesel engines, small and medium power equipment including compactors, paving breakers, compressors, pneumatic tools and power saws and other power driven equipment; keep records on the status of all equipment.
  • Provide a supply service for field crews; work with field supervisors in issuing supplies needed to complete daily work.
  • Submit monthly maintenance reports to assigned supervisory or management staff for vehicles, equipment, warehouse and purchased supplies.
  • Ensure that all vehicles and equipment receive necessary and proper repairs; ensure that all costs are proper and conform to normal price rate structures.
  • Ensure that vehicles are properly filled with oil, gasoline and water in preparation for daily usage by field crews and supervisors.
  • Maintain vehicle and equipment maintenance records for control, cost analysis and budget purposes; initiate and maintain a record system to include cost of material, invoices and warehouse purchase requisitions.
  • Implement and maintain an overall inspection system for the proper maintenance of assigned vehicles and/or equipment.
  • May order, receive and verify shipments of stock items.
  • Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearing, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and related parts and equipment.
  • May tune up engines by replacing ignition parts and reconditioning and adjusting carburetors, throttle body and fuel injection systems and propane fuel systems; repair and maintain emission control and alternative fuel systems.
  • May repair and replace components including generators, distributors, relays, lights, switches and high voltage light systems; repair, adjust and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, masters cylinders, disk pads, machine drums and rotors, hydraulic and air brakes; diagnose and repair electrical and charging systems of Hybrid mowers/equipment.
  • Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment; fabricate and modify tools as needed.
  • May grind cutting units and adjust accordingly to manufacturers specification to include rotary and reel type mowers.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  • May direct the work of lower level equipment mechanic staff.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours of vocational training in mechanical equipment or repair; and

Two (2) years of experience performing minor and major equipment repair.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Drivers License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire.

Possession of a City Operators Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Working Conditions

Environmental:

Shop environment; exposure to dust, grease, noise and fumes; work in confined spaces.

Physical:

Essential and supplemental functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, bending or crouching for prolonged periods of time; moderate to heavy lifting; and operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
