Summary: The Equipment Operator 1 is under the direction of the Group Leader. The Equipment Operator 1 is responsible for job set up and to work cooperatively with others assigned to task. May substitute for lower positions and be required to operate various pieces of Parish equipment as assigned.

• Safely operate power hand tools such as chain saw, pole saw, weed eater, and some specialty equipment such as zero turn mower, boom mower, and dump truck, subject to the Competencies below.
• Cut grass along Parish rights of way.
• Perform manual labor such as weed eating, filling sand bags, cleaning catch basins and culverts.
• Work as flagman or help with road maintenance such as the repair of asphalt road pot holes.
• Inspect equipment daily and perform preventive maintenance (grease, check oil, water etc.), and assist mechanic as needed.
• Maintain safe work environment.
• Any other duties as assigned.

Competencies: Applicant must be able to operate chain saw, pole saw, weed eater, and at least two of the following items of specialty equipment: zero turn mower, boom mower, and dump truck. Applicant must have knowledge and ability to be trained to operate any piece of Parish equipment.

Work Environment: The incumbent typically performs in an outdoor environment. This includes construction sites, open and empty land, wooded areas, both urban and rural roads and drainage, muddy areas, swampy areas, hot, humid, cold, and wet conditions that are consistent with outdoor projects. The incumbent may also be exposed to wildlife and bugs in the environment. This position may include work performed in an office environment for training, plan reviews, meetings, and project preparation and progress reviews.

Physical Demands: Heavy work. Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting, lowering, pulling, pushing and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel and climb in order to complete various job duties. Must be able to stand, sit and walk for extended periods, sometimes on uneven or rough terrain in various weather conditions. If someone can do heavy work, we determine that he or she can also do medium, light, and sedentary work.

Required Education/Qualifications Position requires a valid Class "A" CDL License and a minimum of one year of related experience. CDL must have airbrake and combination vehicles endorsements.
