Distinguishing Features of the Class
An Equipment Operator (Sewer Authority) operates a variety of specialized equipment and vehicles used in sewer maintenance work. Incumbents perform minor maintenance work on equipment and are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of this equipment. S/he follows general directions, including work orders to determine work to be done and routes to be taken, from the Superintendent of Maintenance, who performs period work inspections. Supervision may be exercised over Maintenance Assistants, Laborers I and II.
Examples of work (Illustration Only)
Performs work involving the cleaning of catch basins, siphons, wells and large state receivers on arterial highways in the City of Buffalo.
Operates a variety of specialized equipment including, but not limited to the following:
that are solidly blocked;
unclogging of sewer lines;
covers, catch basins, receivers, manholes, etc.;
High Lift with bucket, used for loading trucks;
Multi-Purpose Bobcat;
Fork Lift Truck;
Broom Truck, used for cleaning streets;
Tractor with mover, used to mow lawns;
Hob Knocker, used to break up street and sidewalk pavements;
Truck with plow and/or spreader;
Performs minor maintenance work on equipment, which includes daily checking of zerk fittings and grease when necessary, draining of air brakes, checking fuel and oil levels, steam cleaning throughout, as required;
Reports problems with equipment and documents same;
Wears safety equipment as required;
May be required to operate a truck in the Sewer Maintenance department;
In an emergency, may supervise Laborers in their work assignments when a Supervisor is not available;
Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
PROMOTIONAL
(A) Continuous and permanent status as a Sewer Construction Worker or Maintenance Assistant (Sewer Cleaning) in the Buffalo Sewer Authority for at least one year;
OR
(B) Continuous status as a Laborer II with two years of permanent status in the non-competitive class in the Buffalo Sewer Authority.
All applicants must have two years of full time experience in the operation of specialized equipment that includes a backhoe.
In addition, applicants must demonstrate the ability to operate a hi-velocity flusher within six months of date of appointment.
Verification of experience, affidavit from employer, must be presented at time of filing application.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of either a current Class A or B Commercial Drivers License with a Tank Endorsement issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles, which must be presented at time of filing application and maintained during employment.
Note: License must allow you to operate vehicles with air-brakes.
OPEN COMPETITIVE
All applicants must have two years of full-time experience in the operation of specialized equipment which includes a backhoe.
In addition, applicants must demonstrate the ability to operate a hi-velocity flusher within six months of date of appointment.
Verification of experience, affidavit from employer, must be presented at time of filing application.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
