Description

Performs intermediate skilled trades work operating heavy equipment required to dispose of solid waste, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Senior Crew Coordinator.

Examples of Duties

  • Operates heavy equipment to place, compact and cover solid waste.

  • Performs pre-trip inspections and general maintenance on equipment.

  • Performs waste screening and inspections.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience working with heavy equipment in a landfill environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; thorough knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment; skill in operation of assigned equipment; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Physical Requirements:

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires standing, walking, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
