Job Description
EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
Salary: $19.39 hourly Dept: Public Works/Storm Water-Maintenance
Exempt: No Reports to: Foreman
Hours: 40 per week Date: 2026
SUMMARY: This position operates medium and heavy automotive equipment, and is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of specialized equipment. The work requires considerable skill in operating motor equipment and constant awareness of safety operation in order to prevent accidents. Assignments are outlined in detail by superiors. Standard procedures should be followed and work is inspected periodically for safety and efficiency in operation. This class differs from Maintenance Worker classes because of the higher degree of skill required, the amount of time spent in operating the equipment, and the greater probability to damage the more expensive equipment. Supervision may be exercised over other employees.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED is required. Possession of valid CDL class "B" motor vehicles operator's license issued by the State of Florida along with Tanker and Air Brake Endorsement is required. A considerable amount of experience is desired in the operation of medium trucks and automotive equipment with complex operating requirements. A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: Employee may work inside an office environment, or outside in various weather conditions, with radiant energy, grease or oils, solvents, or chemicals. Employees may have to work in dusty conditions, poor lighting, noisy conditions, and darkness or on uneven surfaces. Some job tasks may require employee to bend, stoop, drive, kneel, operate equipment, crawl, push or lift or carry 75 pounds or less.
