Purpose of Announcement

EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO SUPPLEMENT THE EXISTING EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL FIVE (5) CURRENT EAST JEFFERSON VACANCIES IN THE DEPARTMENTS OF WATER (3 VACANCIES) AND PARKS & RECREATION (2 VACANCIES) AND EIGHT (8) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCIES IN THE DEPARTMENTS OF SEWERAGE (1 VACANCY), WATER (6 VACANCIES), AND STREETS (1 VACANCY).

This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in various Departments as they occur.

Kind of Work

The purpose of this position is to safely and efficiently operate and maintain the Backhoe and other assigned equipment according to existing safety programs, work standards, and procedures. Besides operating the Backhoe equipment, the operator will be required to inspect and maintain the equipments tire inflation; crankcase oil levels; leaks (oil, fuel, water, etc.); coolant in radiator; lights and signal devices; clear and clean glasses, lamp lenses, mirrors; and functioning windshield wipers. The operator will also be responsible for loading and unloading the backhoe onto trailer for transportation. Operator may be required to perform laboring work with or without hand tools when not operating equipment. Performs related work as required.

Depending on the other assigned vehicles for a particular position, Equipment Operator III - Backhoe Operators may be required to possess a valid Louisiana Standard (Class E), Chauffeurs (Class D), or Commercial (Classes A, B, C) Drivers License in order to perform the tasks associated with the position.

The current vacancies all require driving of a Parish vehicle necessitating a Class A license, thus possession of a valid Class A drivers license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.

Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination

Applicants must meet one (1) of the following:

I. Current employment with Jefferson Parish; PLUS, completion of the Jefferson Parish Backhoe Safety Training Program or certification by an appointing authority that the applicant has been adequately trained to operate a Backhoe.

II. Verifiable, satisfactory experience operating a Backhoe.

III. Completion of an approved training course in operating a Backhoe.

NOTE: Copies of licenses and certificates awarded for completion of training should be submitted with the application.

Vacation (Annual Leave)

Employees accumulate one half day of paid vacation for every two weeks worked.

Leave accrual rates increase with years of service. Any unused annual leave is

usually paid upon separation from Parish Employment.

Sick Leave

Employees accumulate one half day of paid sick leave for every two weeks worked.

Sick leave is available for personal illness, injury or medical consultations.

Holidays

Nine paid official holidays are observed, plus any holidays declared by Parish Officials.

Life Insurance

All regular employees receive a life insurance policy equal to one years salary.

Extra insurance may be purchased.

Medical Insurance

An HMO medical insurance plan is avalable for employees and their

dependents. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of

the premiums for dependents.

A Flexible Benefits Plan

Employees have the opportunity to save money by paying for health

insurance and optional insurance with pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Savings

Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available.

Retirement

Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees Retirement

System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after

January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service

is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with

10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.

Tenure Payment

Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year.

Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.

Deferred Compensation Plan(457b plan)

Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer

up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings.

Pre-tax contributions can be cashed in upon retirement or termination without

penalty. This plan is provided by Nationwide Retirement Solutions 1-877-677-3678.

Special leaves of absence for military service, maternity leave, etc.
