Purpose of Announcement
EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF SEWERAGE.
This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in various Departments as they occur.
Kind of Work
The purpose of this position is to safely and efficiently operate a Medium Excavator (at least 40 hp & under 101 hp), and to perform minor maintenance and servicing of the assigned equipment in accordance to existing safety programs, work standards, and procedures.
The operator will be required to inspect and maintain the equipments tire inflation; oil levels; leaks (oil, fuel, water, etc.); coolant in radiator; lights and signal devices; clear and clean windows, lamp lenses, mirrors; and functioning windshield wipers.
May also be required to operate all equipment assigned to lower level Equipment Operators, as well as all equipment assigned to the level of Equipment Operator III, as assigned by the department.
Depending on the assigned vehicles, Equipment Operator IIIs may be required to possess a valid Louisiana Standard (Class E), Chauffeurs (Class D), or Commercial (Classes A, B, C) Drivers License in order to perform the tasks associated with the position.
Performs related work as required.
This position is an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or his designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish.
The current vacancy requires driving of a Parish vehicle necessitating a Class A license, thus possession of a valid Class A drivers license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.
Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination
Meets ONE of the following three options:
1) Current employment with Jefferson Parish; plus, completion of the Medium/Large Excavator Safety Training Program or certification by an Appointing Authority that the applicant has been adequately trained to operate a Medium (or Large) Excavator (at least 40 hp).
2) Verifiable, satisfactory experience operating a Medium (or Large) Excavator (at least 40 hp).
3) Completion of an approved training course in operating a Medium (or Large) Excavator (at least 40 hp).
NOTE: Copies of licenses and certificates awarded for completion of training should be submitted with the application.

Vacation (Annual Leave)
Employees accumulate one half day of paid vacation for every two weeks worked.
Leave accrual rates increase with years of service. Any unused annual leave is usually paid upon separation from Parish Employment.
Sick Leave
Employees accumulate one half day of paid sick leave for every two weeks worked.
Sick leave is available for personal illness, injury or medical consultations.
Holidays
Nine paid official holidays are observed, plus any holidays declared by Parish Officials.
Life Insurance
All regular employees receive a life insurance policy equal to one years salary. Extra insurance may be purchased.
Medical Insurance
An HMO medical insurance plan is avalable for employees and their dependents. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of the premiums for dependents.
A Flexible Benefits Plan
Employees have the opportunity to save money by paying for health insurance and optional insurance with pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Savings Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available.
Retirement
Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees Retirement System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with 10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.
Tenure Payment
Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year. Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.
Deferred Compensation Plan (457b plan)
Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings. Pre-tax contributions can be cashed in upon retirement or termination without penalty. This plan is provided by Nationwide Retirement Solutions 1-877-677-3678.
Special leaves of absence for military service, maternity leave, etc. may be granted in accordance with the Personnel Rules.
