Work is performed in accordance with general instructions regarding work to be done but the operator determines operational decisions. Work frequently involves responsibility for moving heavy equipment and materials, and f or the safety of personnel working in conjunction with the equipment operator. Generally the productivity of the entire operation being performed is dependent on the operational efficiency of this equipment. Supervision consists primarily of job performan ce checks made at work sites. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES : (Illustrative only) Operates equipment used in loading gravel, shale, dirt and stone for highway maintenance and construction; Operates equipment on construction work; Digs trenches, digs cuts on hi ghway right -of-way and for placing of culverts; Excavates trenches for the repair and installation of water mains, water services and fire hydrants; Breaks up concrete and asphalt roadways; Maintains equipment and makes routine mechanical and electrical re pairs; Lubricates and oils moving parts; Cleans the equipment, repairs and winds wire cable; Performs related work as required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS : Considerable knowledge of heavy construction equi pment, Considerable knowledge of the component parts and operating principles of heavy construction equipment; Good knowledge of the safety precautions for excavating around underground facilities such as electric lines, gas mains and other utility condui ts; Skill in the operation of heavy construction equipment ; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; Ability to service equipment and to make minor running repairs; Ability to use a breaker head attachment for the purpose of break ing up concrete and asphalt roadways; Ability to perform heavy labor for prolonged periods and under adverse climatic conditions; Ability to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds; Equipment Operator III - CSC 8 -24-2022 Page 2 of 2 Ability to read and write; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Two years of experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment, particularly road graders or similar equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATION : Eligibility and possession of a CDL Class A license without air brake restrictions issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of appointment and f or the duration of employment.
