Description

The City of Norfolks Department of Parks and Recreation is currently seeking a Forestry Equipment Operator (Equipment Operator IV). This equipment operator position is required to maintain equipment, stockpile bulk materials, and provide training and support for assigned crews. The incumbent will operate heavy equipment, construction equipment, and trucks. The Equipment Operator IV will operate heavy equipment such as bulldozers, trailers, cranes, dump trucks, backhoes, and beach sanitizing equipment. model and promote safe work practices, provide assistance to crews, perform minor repairs and maintenance, load, unload, and transport equipment and supplies to job sites. This position is a leadership role, and the selected candidate will be the lead equipment operator, responsible for training other equipment operators and maintenance workers while assisting the structure repair and ditch maintenance crews.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Provides maintenance by removing debris from ditches, removing unauthorized waste materials, loading materials, digging ditches, repairing caves and structures, transporting materials to and from job sites and using heavy construction equipment as assigned.
  • Maintains and operates heavy construction equipment such as surf rakes, beach sanitizing equipment, front end loaders, maintainers, cranes, bulldozers, lowboy trailers, dump trucks, backhoes and trailers, forklifts, and other equipment.
  • Provides assistance to yard crew, performing minor maintenance and repair, checking equipment for fuel, fluids and safety, loading and unloading equipment on trailers and lowboys and transporting to job site.
  • Stockpiles bulk materials by loading, unloading and separating materials as needed.
  • Provides training and support by training other team members on heavy equipment operation such as front-end loaders, providing the correct quantities of materials to produce asphalt, maintenance and repair of divisions building and providing emergency response recovery including snow and storm debris removal.
  • Responds to emergencies by removing storm damage debris.
  • Performs safety checks and minor preventative maintenance on equipment, including but not limited to, checking fluids, changing blades and daily inspections to ensure equipment is safe to operate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Required:

  • Four years experience in equipment operations.
  • Valid CDL

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Location: 2839 Dana Street, Norfolk, VA 23509

Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM. 40 hours per week.

  • Retirement

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
