EO Street Maintenance

Job Description:

The incumbent under the guidance of the Street Maintenance Supervisor operates equipment safely and efficiently to maintain city streets in good repair.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times.

  • Operate equipment as assigned.
  • Drive and watch the A-Team as assigned.
  • Perform maintenance and upkeep of all equipment
  • Patch potholes as the need arises.
  • Pour and finish concrete - cement experience a plus.
  • Keep drains clear by removing limbs and large pieces of debris out of streets and drainage ditches.
  • Salt and sand streets during snow and ice.
  • Operate chainsaw, jackhammer, power tools, etc. as needed.
  • Perform upkeep and maintenance of all equipment.
  • Place barricades to control and direct traffic as needed. (EOIII)
  • Cut down dead trees when necessary. (EOIII)
  • Set concrete forms to include curb, gutter, inlets and junction boxes. (EOIII)
  • Inspect and clean drainage inlets and junction boxes. (EOIII)
  • Haul off debris and dirt from job. (EOIII)
  • Build fences as required.
  • Subject to call-outs after hours during bad weather conditions.
  • Regular attendance and timeliness is required.

Qualification Requirements:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EO in Training:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and must obtain required CDL within 9 months of hire. Must sit for written exam within 3 months of hire; must pass written exam within 6 months of hire; and must pass driving exam within 9 months of hire.
  • No experience necessary. On the job training for transitioning to higher EO levels.
  • May be required to operate various pieces of equipment.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EOI:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have valid Class B CDL w/air brake endorsement.
  • No experience necessary.
  • May be required to operate: crack sealer/patch truck/dump truck/loader/tractor/sprayer

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EOII:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have valid Class B CDL w/air brake and passenger endorsement.
  • 6 months previous experience in operating construction related vehicles or heavy equipment is necessary.
  • May be required to operate above equipment plus: passenger bus/hot mix truck/concrete truck/sweeper/bobcat.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE for EOIII:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must have valid Class B or C CDL w/air brake endorsement upon hire. Must have or be able to obtain a valid Class A CDL w/air brake endorsement with 9 months of hire.
  • 12 months previous experience in operating construction related vehicles or heavy equipment is necessary.
  • May be required to operate above equipment plus: backhoe/excavator

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • The incumbent should possess knowledge of the use of tools and equipment used in the department
  • Problem solving, speed and accuracy are required to perform the duties of this position
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also required

POSITION DESIGNATIONS

This position is designated as essential during inclement weather events. City services will be maintained during inclement weather, such as heavy snow or ice storms and all essential employees are expected to report to work due to the critical functions of the position. This position is not able to work remotely.

This position does have the potential to drive as part of their regular job duties.

This position is designated as a safety/security sensitive position and is subject to random DOT drug and alcohol screenings and/or non-DOT drug and alcohol screenings (a safety/security sensitive position is one in which a momentary lapse in attention may result in injury or death of another person).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently stand, climb, walk, talk and hear. Occasionally sit; use hands to handle objects, and reach with hands and arms. The incumbent must also stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, color, distance, and peripheral vision. Depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also required.

The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 100 pounds.

While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions and is required to work near moving mechanical parts. The incumbent is also exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals as well as non-weather related extreme heat. The incumbent is also at risk of electrical shock and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
